Ion-containing polymers, also known as ionomers or polyelectrolytes, have many important applications in a variety of technologies. We have demonstrated success in the design and synthesis of a new class of simple and versatile ionomers that have a wide array of useful characteristics, including excellent ion conduction, ion-exchange capability, moisture transfer, and anti-fouling properties. These materials are derived from the sulfonation of aryl containing block copolymers. They block copolymers phase-separate on a nanoscopic scale forming nano-domains that are interconnected, affording excellent ionic conductivity and water transport.
