Aerogels are porous materials that are produced by sol-gel polycondensation reactions. A common feature of all aerogels is their small inter-connected pores. The aerogel chemical composition, nanostructure and physical properties can be controlled at the nanometer scale due to sol-gel processing.

There are three major types of aerogels: inorganic, organic and carbon aerogels. Inorganic aerogels are obtained by supercritical drying of highly cross-linked and transparent hydrogels synthesized by polycondensation of metal alkoxides. Silica aerogels are the most well known inorganic aerogels. Organic aerogels are synthesized by supercritical drying of the gels obtained by the sol-gel polycondensation reaction of resorcinol with formaldehyde in aqueous solutions. Carbon aerogels are prepared by pyrolyzing such organic aerogels in an inert atmosphere.

Incorporation of additives into aerogels results in materials that are called aerogel composites. The role of the additives is to enhance the properties of pure aerogels or to impart additional desirable properties depending on the application.

Aerogel Composite, LLC has patented the nanotechnology for the preparation of aerogel composites for a wide variety of applications. Our flagship product is a platinum loaded carbon aerogel nanocomposite for use as an electrocatalyst in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells. A typical nanoviricides drug is designed like a chemical missile. It has a number of recognition "ligands" on its surface, that are specific to a single type of virus, say HIV. US Nanocorp, Inc. (USN) is developing intermediate temperature (600 О– 800 oC operating temperature) solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) using a combination of new materials, novel manufacturing routes, and nanostructures. This intermediate temperature SOFC development explores SOFC components based on a mixed ionic and electronic conductor (MIEC) as anode material and strontium and magnesia doped lanthanum gallite (LSGM) as electrolyte materials. The MIEC anode material, e.g., yttrium-doped strontium titanate (SYT), has several advantages compared to conventional cermet-based anode materials, including (i) it is capable of low temperature operation, (ii) high anode catalytic activity, (iii) high chemical and structural stability, and (iv) greatly reduced carbon deposition (coking effect).

Currently, USN has fabricated single demonstration cells of this type of SOFC using a plasma spray technique. Advantage of using a plasma spray technique includes (i) sequential and integrated fabrication of anode, electrolyte, and cathode, thereby an easily automated manufacturing process, (ii) reduced interfacial overpotential (anode/electrolyte/cathode interfaces) due to the nature of the excellent bonding between electrodes-electrolytes interfaces, (iii) no extra co-firing step is needed, (iv) obtained nanostructured electrodes, and (v) easy manufacturing automation.
