The existing technology of quantum dots and artificial atoms leads logically to the idea of programmable dopant fibers, or "Wellstone (TM)." Wellstone(TM) smart materials can introduce quantum dopants into a bulk material whose properties can then be adjusted in real time.

A Programmable Matter(TM) smart material is any bulk substance whose physical properties can be adjusted in real time through the application of light, voltage, electric or magnetic fields, etc. Primitive forms may allow only limited adjustment of one or two traits (e.g., the "photodarkening" or "photochromic" materials found in light-sensitive sunglasses), but there are theoretical forms which, using known principles of electronics, should be capable of emulating a broad range of naturally occurring materials, or of exhibiting unnatural properties which cannot be produced by other means.

Nanotechnology is already making a contribution to the Colorado economy. It is important to note that 39.5% of companies responding to the survey that are involved in nanotechnology already have nanotech products on the market. Based on this survey, it is estimated that there are 150 full- and 150 part-time workers in nano-specific technical positions. Even at this early stage of development, about 30% of these firms report annual revenues greater than $1 million in 2005, and one firm reported revenue in excess of $10 million. These firms contribute $14.2 million in R&D expenditures ($8.8 million of which are federal funds to Colorado companies via SBIR/STTR programs) to the Colorado economy.

The nanotechnology R&D being performed by Colorado firms has applications in many industry sectors; the most common are electronics (45.5%), aerospace (44.7%), homeland security (33.3%), biomedical (33.3%), defense (27.3%), and energy (27.3%). These are prominent industry sectors in Colorado and form the basis for the state’s technology-based economy.
