&lt;p&gt;At the beginning of this year, the USEPA launched its Nanoscale Materials Stewardship Program to help provide a firmer scientific foundation for regulatory decisions by encouraging voluntary submission and development of information, including risk management practices for nanoscale materials. The stewardship program encourages participants – including manufacturers – to develop and report data on nanomaterials.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;New State laws also provide a mechanism for state agencies to collaborate with chemical manufacturers to develop information such as analytical test methods, fate and transport in the environment, bioconcentration and other relevant information for chemicals manufactured or imported in the State. Under this new law, for instance, manufacturers may be required to provide information about chemical upon the request of that State, within a year of the request.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The State of California is also becoming involved with nanomaterials, including a new regulatory approach the Department of Toxic Substances Control is undertaking to compile relevant information on nanomaterials, as well as other chemicals.  Chapter 699, Sections 57018-57020 became part of the Health and Safety Code in California in 2006.  This new law provides a mechanism for state agencies to collaborate with chemical manufacturers to develop information such as analytical test methods, fate and transport in the environment, bioconcentration and other relevant information for chemicals manufactured or imported in the State.  Included in the law is the requirement that manufacturers shall provide specified information about chemicals of concern within a year of the Department&#039;s request.&quot; &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Jim Alwood, from USEPA’s Chemical Control Division in Washington, D.C., will discuss his agency’s nanotechnology program, including an overview of the Toxic Substances Control Act and the Nanoscale Materials Stewardship Program. Dr. Jeff Wong, Chief Scientist for the DTSC, will highlight the main provisions of the new state law and how the Department and the nano industry can work together in implementing it.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Biological cells are the ultimate example of &#039;soft machines&#039;, which rely on the operation of complex molecular machines made of organic matter. It is clear that man-made attempts to emulate biological systems are nowhere near the same level of complexity.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Soft nanotechnology aims to build on our knowledge of biological systems, by implementing self-assembly and &#039;wet chemistry&#039; into electronic devices, actuators, fluidics, etc.  Understanding, predicting and utilising the rules of self-assembly (be it at solid liquid interfaces, in solution, or in block copolymers) and interface the resulting complex structures in well-defined 2D and 3D arrangements.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The control of nanoscale features of polymers in two and three dimensions impacts on device physics as much as on cell adhesion and cell differentiation. As we are approaching the limits of Moore&#039;s law the demand for more advanced and sophisticated polymers suitable for patterning at the nanoscale as much as the need for new materials compatible with alternative patterning can only be satisfied if we understand the fundamental nature of self-assembly and self-organization of organic materials in this context.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Themes&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Fundamental questions that will be addressed during the discussion are:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;    * What are the new effects when patterning soft materials at the nanoscale? (i.e. where do &#039;materials&#039; break up into &#039;molecules&#039;, how do physical/mechanical properties change with size).&lt;br /&gt;
    * How can these effects be understood and exploited?&lt;br /&gt;
    * Is it possible to go one step further and predict yet unencountered behaviour?&lt;br /&gt;
    * What are the limitations in feature shape, sizes, complexity and function that are accessible via direct patterning and self-assembly?&lt;br /&gt;
    * How much progress is being made into fabricating/assembling devices based on such structured polymers. Can we ever rival silicon devices or cellular function?&lt;/p&gt;

In more recent years, my research has reached a defined equilibrium with distinct components in both analytical separations and analytical spectroscopy. In an effort to present a broad scope of my current and ongoing research, this talk will focus in these two distinct areas of analytical chemistry, as well as new areas of research focus. The analytical utility of all of these areas of research will be discussed, with a particular focus on new directions of research in my group involving applications of nanotechnology.&lt;/p&gt;

The difficulty with nanotechnology is that novel hazards and risks may be presented and this information may therefore be incomplete.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The public’s fear of ‘grey goo’ has been well-documented by the media. But negative public perceptions and a lack of consumer confidence can only fail to support a nano-industry in the UK. Moreover, the possibility of a potentially inappropriate regulatory framework could be serious barriers for UK companies in adopting nanotechnology, and could decelerate UK competitiveness.&lt;br /&gt;
In recent parliamentary discussions Ian Pearson MP highlighted current UK efforts to regulate nanotechnology health and safety and stressed to the house the Government&#039;s commitment to understanding any potential risks of nanotechnologies and to managing them within a proportionate regulatory framework.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Clearly, there also needs to be a bottom-up approach to risk management, and it is therefore vital that managers in organisations producing nanomaterials embrace a professional approach to this in order to increase public confidence, and also demonstrate to the regulatory bodies that all aspects of risk vs benefits are being properly assessed. Not only is this necessary to protect workers involved in production and use of these materials, the public and the ecosystem, but also it also helps inform the public debate about the development of these new, potentially beneficial, materials.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Consumers and producers are not the only parties pausing for thought in the nano-debate. Bringing nano-based products to the market raises questions for insurers. Limited precedence and a rapidly changing level of knowledge means that the concomitant lack of data with which to understand and assess nano-risks is an ongoing problem for insurance companies. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;To address these issues, the Institute of Nanotechnology is hosting a key meeting - ‘Risk Management for NanoBusinesses&#039; - which will provide risk management techniques for individuals involved in nanotechnology research and development within companies, universities and facilities. The main areas of discussion include building consumer confidence, looking at the extent to which UK regulatory structures have been adapted to suit nanomaterials, and an overview of the NanoMark Certification System in Taiwan , which is designed to build consumers&#039; acceptance of Nanoproducts.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The application of nanotechnology is currently revolutionizing medicine and this two-day conference, the first of its kind in Europe, will examine the role nanotechnology could also play in improving or refining the development of alternatives to animal testing whilst maintaining safety. &lt;p&gt;    * a review of some of the most promising human cell-based in vitro models&lt;br /&gt;
    * novel lab-on-a-chip and bioreactor systems for screening, toxicology and targeting studies&lt;br /&gt;
    * surface modification at the nanoscale to improve biosensors and in vitro test systems&lt;br /&gt;
    * potential new strategies for applying nanotechnology to alternatives&lt;br /&gt;
    * the role of the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM)&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The conference will be of particular interest to those involved in:&lt;/p&gt;
