Faraday Discussion 143: Soft Nanotechnology

Short description

Faraday Discussion 143 will incorporate aspects of structuring soft-materials at the nanoscale and the incorporation of such materials into actual devices.

Long description

Faraday Discussion 143 will incorporate aspects of structuring soft-materials at the nanoscale and the incorporation of such materials into actual devices.

Biological cells are the ultimate example of 'soft machines', which rely on the operation of complex molecular machines made of organic matter. It is clear that man-made attempts to emulate biological systems are nowhere near the same level of complexity.

Soft nanotechnology aims to build on our knowledge of biological systems, by implementing self-assembly and 'wet chemistry' into electronic devices, actuators, fluidics, etc. Understanding, predicting and utilising the rules of self-assembly (be it at solid liquid interfaces, in solution, or in block copolymers) and interface the resulting complex structures in well-defined 2D and 3D arrangements.

The control of nanoscale features of polymers in two and three dimensions impacts on device physics as much as on cell adhesion and cell differentiation. As we are approaching the limits of Moore's law the demand for more advanced and sophisticated polymers suitable for patterning at the nanoscale as much as the need for new materials compatible with alternative patterning can only be satisfied if we understand the fundamental nature of self-assembly and self-organization of organic materials in this context.

Themes

Fundamental questions that will be addressed during the discussion are:

    * What are the new effects when patterning soft materials at the nanoscale? (i.e. where do 'materials' break up into 'molecules', how do physical/mechanical properties change with size).
* How can these effects be understood and exploited?
* Is it possible to go one step further and predict yet unencountered behaviour?
* What are the limitations in feature shape, sizes, complexity and function that are accessible via direct patterning and self-assembly?
* How much progress is being made into fabricating/assembling devices based on such structured polymers. Can we ever rival silicon devices or cellular function?

JPK Instruments and the Charité will hold the 6th international workshop "Scanning Probe Microscopy in Life Sciences" in Berlin, which covers the application of Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) to areas such as biochemical and medical research. Continuously growing over the recent years, we expect more than 100 scientists to attend the meeting to hear about recent developments in interdisciplinary research fields presented by our international speakers. As always we invited reowned scientists to talk about their latest results.

The workshop will be accompanied by a poster session and the presentation of JPK's NanoWizard®II BioAFM. The posters will be judged by a scientific jury and the author of the best poster will be awarded.

1st Annual Conference

Nanotechnology was incorporated into more than $50 billion in manufactured goods last year, according to Lux Research. By 2014, the market will grow to $2.6 trillion.

Nanotechnology was incorporated into more than $50 billion in manufactured goods last year, according to Lux Research. By 2014, the market will grow to $2.6 trillion. By 2011, over $15 billion in nano-enabled drugs and therapeutics will be sold—up from more than $3 billion in 2006. And industry experts project that nanotechnology will be incorporated into $20 billion worth of consumer food products by 2010.

Yet, despite this rapid commercialization, no nano-specific regulation exists anywhere in the world. Most regulatory agencies remain in an information-gathering mode—lacking the legal and scientific tools, information and resources they need to adequately oversee exponential nanotechnology market growth.

Now, for the first time, you’ll get to meet all the top officials from these government departments in one place and learn of their plans for regulating food and drug nanotech products. You’ll hear what’s really happening in Europe and Asia, on Wall Street, in the corridors of major corporations, in the more advanced laboratories, at forward-thinking universities and in the halls of Congress.

And you’ll also get the answers to those questions you’ve been talking to your colleagues about for the last several months:

    * How is FDA going to implement its Nanotechnology Task Force Report?
* How is OSHA going to deal with nanotech issues in the workplace?
* Is Congress ready to act on nanotechnology if federal regulators don’t?
* What first and second generation nanotechnology products are already on the market, and what’s to come?
* Do Europe and Asia approach nanotechnology safety and oversight differently
than the United States?
* When it comes to nanotechnology, should size make a regulatory difference?

Who Should Attend

Pharmaceutical firm representatives, nanotech development specialists, venture capitalists, in-house and outside legal counsel, nanotech policy officials.
