Short description

The anticipated impact of
nanotechnology upon society is frequently referred to as the "second
industrial revolution." Recognizing the potential that nanotechnology has to
affect business and industry in the near future, Barnes & Thornburg LLP has
established a Nanotechnology Practice Group to continue its current work in
the area and assist businesses involved in seeking new applications of
nanotechnology.

Article body

Nanotechnology refers to a field of applied science and technology that
relates to the control of matter on the atomic or molecular scale, generally
100 nanometers or smaller, and the fabrication of devices or materials that
lie within that size range. The firm's attorneys already are advising clients
on nanotechnology's applications in a variety of fields, including in
biotechnology, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, electrical engineering and
environmental.

The practice group, co-chaired by Philip J. Faccenda, Jr., a partner in
the firm's South Bend office, and Todd Vare, a partner in the firm's
Indianapolis office, includes attorneys from a variety of disciplines,
including intellectual property, business, environmental, biotech,
governmental services, entrepreneurial services and litigation.

"Our clients increasingly are investigating how nanotechnology can be
brought to market in a variety of applications - from biotech to textiles,
manufacturing processes to environmental remediation," Vare said. "This new
group gives us a more integrated approach to helping clients use
nanotechnology to advance their business interests in their particular
industry sectors."

The announcement comes on the heels of a seminar hosted by Barnes &
Thornburg that addressed the possibilities of nanotechnology from the
perspectives of a Barnes & Thornburg attorney as well as professors from
Purdue University and the University of Notre Dame. In addition, the recent
announcement of the new Midwest Institute for Nanoelectronics Discovery (MIND)
at the University of Notre Dame has raised the profile of nanotechnology and
its applications, especially in the Midwest.

"Barnes & Thornburg recognizes the impact the new institute will have on
businesses throughout Indiana and the Midwest," Faccenda said. "We want to do
everything we can to provide helpful counsel on the issues related to
nanotechnology."

With more than 475 attorneys and other legal professionals, Barnes &
Thornburg LLP is the largest law firm in Indiana and one of the largest firms
in the Midwest. The firm serves clients worldwide from its offices in Chicago,
Indiana, Michigan and Washington, D.C.

Industrial Nanotech, Inc. (Pink Sheets:INTK), an emerging global leader in nanotechnology, announced today that the Company has successfully added effective fire suppression technology to its Nansulate EPX product line of energy saving epoxy coatings.

"The addition of fire suppression technology into our new upcoming Nansulate EPX product line is a significant breakthrough", explained Stuart Burchill, CEO/CTO of Industrial Nanotech, Inc. "Combining this valuable performance quality with the coating's existing abilities to provide thermal insulation, corrosion protection, increased chemical resistance, a quick cure time, resistance to growth of mold, effectiveness as a lead abatement coating, and the ability to be applied from a fraction of an inch thick to several inches thick creates a product that provides unique and critical value added propositions for many industries around the world including manufacturing, oil and gas, biodiesel, chemical processing, residential and commercial construction, military equipment and facilities, power plants, and ship building and retrofit."

Mr. Burchill continues, "We will include all necessary standard testing data in the product release material, but a simple laboratory test we recently conducted illustrates the effectiveness. We coated a piece of cardboard from a standard cardboard box with an approximately one eighth inch thick coating of Nansulate EPX and applied the flame of a blow torch directly to the coated side for almost ten minutes. The coating never ignited, no smoke was observed, the flame of the blow torch never penetrated the coating, and the cardboard was sufficiently insulated from the heat of the blowtorch flame to avoid any charring or damage. The ramifications of this technological accomplishment are far reaching."

Industrial Nanotech, Inc. Expands New EPX Product Line

Short description

Industrial Nanotech, Inc. (Pink Sheets:INTK), an emerging global leader in nanotechnology, today announced that the Company has released a second addition to their patented revolutionary new water-based Nansulate EPX line.

Article body

Industrial Nanotech, Inc. (Pink Sheets:INTK), an emerging global leader in nanotechnology, today announced that the Company has released a second addition to their patented revolutionary new water-based Nansulate EPX line. EPX-K will offer the same outstanding corrosion and chemical resistance as their EPX-4 product, with increased thermal resistance and greater ease of application due to lower viscosity.

“This second unique epoxy product creates an additional tremendous revenue opportunity for Industrial Nanotech, Inc.,” stated Francesca Crolley, V.P. Of Operations & Marketing. “The first product in the EPX line, EPX-4, provides an industry high thermal insulation capability, with laboratory tests showing a K value of only 0.027 W/mK, combined with exceptional fire resistance, protection against corrosion, and excellent chemical resistance. The demand for this product has been immediate and substantial and we began shipping product worldwide last week. The newest addition to the EPX product line, EPX-K, offers an increase in thermal resistance and the same corrosion protection and chemical resistance. The EPX-4 product will be the one to use if fire resistance is a desired attribute, and EPX-K will be the product of choice if a customer is looking for easier application by brush instead of specialized spray equipment or trowel.”

Ms. Crolley continues, “This opens up markets throughout areas of important, rapidly expanding regions of the world, including India, China, and Brazil, where the need for a product like this is high, but the access to industrial application equipment is more limited in many areas. The recent substantial increase in the number of inquiries and level of interest in our products from India was the catalyst for the creation of this version of the EPX system technology.”

Nansulate(R) EPX is the Company's newest addition to their line of nanotechnology-based coatings which has a four year track record of providing energy and cost saving solutions for industry and homeowners worldwide. Nansulate(R) EPX combines superior thermal insulating ability with excellent corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, and flame resistance in the EPX-4 version, making it a unique and powerful protective coating for a wide variety of industrial and commercial plant, equipment, and building applications. The EPX product line presents a great value added proposition for industrial and OEM clients with a fast cure time, revolutionary thermal insulation performance, outstanding chemical resistance to both base and acid chemicals... including 95% concentration sulfuric acid, and long-term protection against metal corrosion in marine and deep sea environments. The coating can be applied from 1/8" thick to several inches thick.”

About Nansulate(R)

Nansulate(R) is the Company's patented product line of specialty coatings containing a nanotechnology based material and which are well-documented to provide the combined performance qualities of thermal insulation, corrosion prevention, resistance to mold growth, and lead encapsulation in an environmentally safe, water-based, coating formulation.
NanoBusiness Alliance Completes Successful Public Policy Tour of Washington, DC

Short description

The NanoBusiness Alliance, the world's leading nanotechnology trade association, today announced that CEOs from over forty of its member companies met with members of the House Science, Senate Commerce and Senate Small Business committees and members of the House and Senate Nanotech Caucuses during a two-day policy tour held recently in Washington, DC.

Article body

The central issue for the Alliance during this visit was the re-authorization of the 21st Century Research and Development Act. This Act, whose passage in 2003 established America as the leader in nanotechnology research, is up for renewal. Over the years Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, China, India and most recently, Russia have begun their own aggressive and well-funded nanotech initiatives. By some estimates, Asia now leads the world in nanotech funding.

“Nanotechnology addresses some of humanity’s most pressing challenges including the quest for renewable energy, clean water and the cure for cancer. It is no surprise that there is such interest in this technology from the global community,” said Aatish Salvi, Vice President of the NanoBusiness Alliance. “We haven’t seen a technology race this intense or this close since the Apollo Project. Given how much America’s economy relies on innovation and technology leadership we cannot afford to not re-authorize this act and lose our position as the world leader in nanoscience.”

The tour also included a Nanotechnology Product Showcase that enabled 20 nanotech companies to demonstrate and explain their developments to members of Congress and their staffs. These included nanotechnology-enabled products ranging from a lightweight, chemically resistant uniform to energy-saving coatings that insulate windows to diagnostic applications for phosphate control in patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). Alliance members also met with officials from the EPA to express their support for the Nanoscale Materials Stewardship Program and their commitment to sharing information with the EPA through the channels it provides.

NanoBusiness Alliance members will next gather for their annual NanoBusiness 2008 conference, being held at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York City from May 4 – 6. For information, please contact Vincent Caprio; vince@nanobusiness.org.

Nanotechnology research lab based in Belgium will collaborate on cutting-edge computer chip process

Article body

ALBANY -- The University at Albany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering will begin collaborating with IMEC, a leading European research lab that has long been considered a major rival.

Based in Leuven, Belgium, a university city in the Flanders region, IMEC employs 1,500 people and is considered the leading nanotechnology center in Europe.

IMEC was started in 1984 by the Flemish government and also has a lab in the Netherlands. Although its doors opened in 2004, the NanoCollege's roots date back to 2001, and it has been competing with IMEC for recognition and resources since then.

Like the NanoCollege, IMEC brings together academics and corporate partners to exploit advances in nanotechnology and the computer chip industry.

The NanoCollege and IMEC will collaborate on extreme ultraviolet lithography, a cutting-edge process in computer chip manufacturing that has yet to be adopted commercially.

Semiconductor companies use lithography to "print" circuits onto silicon wafers that are cut into computer chips following dozens of complex manufacturing steps using sophisticated equipment. Extreme ultraviolet lithography can print smaller components than current technologies.

"We can literally move in the realm of having more than a billion transistors on a chip," Alain Kaloyeros, the NanoCollege's chief administrative officer, said of the potential.

The partnership's first experiments will take place in Albany, although other work will be done in Belgium in the future.

Scientists from IBM Corp. and ASML Holdings NV, a Dutch lithography tool maker, will also participate.

The NanoCollege has been positioning itself as a center for extreme ultraviolet lithography research. In 2006, it installed a $65 million extreme ultraviolet lithography machine known as the Alpha Demo Tool. Made by ASML, the research tool is the first of its kind in the world and will be used in the experiments designed by the partnership.

"This is a long-term collaboration," Kaloyeros said.

Short description

As the world’s first to achieve mass production of advanced-type LED printheads using nanotechnology for integrating CMOS and LEDs

OKI Printing Solutions and its LED business company, OKI Digital Imaging, today announced their participation in the 4th International Nanotechnology Conference on Communication and Cooperation, to be held 14th-17th April in Tokyo, Japan.

As the world’s first to achieve mass production of advanced-type LED printheads using nanotechnology for integrating CMOS and LEDs, OKI Digital Imaging will give an invited lecture in the session of ‘More than Moore – Bridge to Photonics’. The lecture will encompass that EFB technology will bring breakthrough in “Silicon photonics” and will view future prospect of EFB technology as a Bridge to Photonics. EFB technology, which has been applied to OKI Printing Solutions’ printers, is a revolutionary technology specifically developed to enhance the performance and productivity of its High Definition LED printheads – setting OKI Printing Solutions apart from its competitors.

The annual International Nanotechnology Conference on Communication and Cooperation strengthens the dialogue between Japan, Europe and the United States on nanotechnology. Over 300 global senior researchers, industry leaders, policy makers and technologists will highlight nanotechnology’s challenges of tomorrow and explore its links between biotechnology, advanced materials development, micro-/nano-electro-mechanical-systems and photonics.

Harushige Sugimoto, President and CEO of OKI Printing Solutions said: “We are delighted that our original EFB technology is gaining recognition as a key achievement in ‘More than Moore’ theory. EFB technology will create innovative integrated device systems providing high-functionality through innovation, as opposed to pursuing advancements along the ‘Moore’s Law.’ We look forward to exchanging our views on future research priorities and trends in nanotechnology with global researchers to further contribute to economic growth.”

OKI Printing Solutions’ breakthrough EFB is a complex nanotechnology that works by releasing and bonding thin films onto dissimilar materials using intermolecular force. EFB enables to connect integrated devices with monolithic structure of thin film wirings. This reduces the need for wire bonding and significantly cuts down on the size of integrated thin film devices. EFB technology has been recognized with a range of awards and is suitable for various applications in higher density integration of dissimilar material devices.

The technology has improved LED printhead productivity and has significantly contributed to a more efficient LED printhead manufacturing process. EFB provides an enhancement to the existing LED technology, reaffirming OKI Printing Solutions’ position as an innovator and pioneer.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The stage is set for the inauguration of the 95th Indian Science Congress in the Steel City by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The stage is set for the inauguration of the 95th Indian Science Congress in the Steel City by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday.

Though this edition will, as usual, witness scientists deliberating on different facets of scientific development, the major thrust is likely to be on emerging fields like biotechnology, nanotechnology and the much-talked about rural empowerment by leveraging technology. This can be clearly gauged from the importance attached to these areas that will figure in symposia, plenary sessions as well as special public lectures.

While eminent agriculture scientist M.S. Swaminathan will lead the country’s scientists in deliberations on rural knowledge revolution and “ever green revolution” that he is at present championing, Nobel laureate Robert Carl Jr will enlighten participants on the changes in the nanotechnology sector. Laying emphasis on rural development and empowerment to achieve sustainable development, experts led by eminent space research scientist U.R. Rao will discuss the modalities for dissemination of knowledge using space technologies for putting telemedicine and related concepts to effective use.

Coping up with challenges posed on bio-diversity, water scarcity and global warming & climate change will constitute the theme of the genomic and biology sectors where Nobel laureates Roger Kornberg and Paul Nurse will interact with participants giving them an overview of the advances achieved in these areas. In the backdrop of the concerns expressed on the nuclear deal with the United States, scientists will deliberate on the country’s energy security and the measures needed to meet the ever-increasing demand.

One of the interesting elements in the five-day 95th edition of the ISC, expected to be attended by over 8,000 delegates from India and abroad, is a session on “interface between physics and Vedanta” bringing together physicists from the United States and the scholars of the Sri Venkateswara Vedic University. The M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation is organising a first of its kind virtual conference — mahila kisan — wherein women from six States would be brought on to a single platform through video-conference facility.

SIA: Lots of Rhetoric but Little Action on Bipartisan Competitiveness Agenda

Short description

A year that started with great promise of bipartisan action to enhance American competitiveness in the global economy.

Article body

“A year that started with great promise of bipartisan action to enhance American competitiveness in the global economy appears about to end with no significant action on any of the key elements,” said Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) President George Scalise. “To say that we are keenly disappointed would be a huge understatement.”

The SIA noted that President Bush and the Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives both made strong commitments to increasing funding for basic research, reforming visa programs to ease the hiring of the best and brightest foreign-born scholars with advanced degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and modernizing and extending the R&D tax credit. “Both Congress and the Administration have taken bows for their strong commitment to enhancing U.S. competitiveness and innovative capabilities, but the rhetoric has greatly outstripped the action,” Scalise continued.

“While Congress recently passed and President Bush signed the ‘America COMPETES Act,’ these actions mean little without an actual appropriation to fund the programs it authorizes. Current spending bills drastically shortchange research funding for the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Institute for Science and Technology (NIST), and the Department of Energy,” Scalise said. NSF and NIST both play critical roles in the Nanoelectronics Research Initiative which supports cutting-edge basic research in collaboration with industry and universities.

SIA noted that without action this week, funding for basic research at universities and the national laboratories will fall far short of the levels promised by the President and the House leadership; U.S. companies will continue to be disadvantaged in the competition to hire the best and brightest foreign-born graduates from American universities; and the R&D tax credit will expire on December 31, 2007.

“Our competitors in the global economy are poised to seize the opportunities presented by our inaction on these critical concerns,” Scalise said. “Other countries and regions have put in place generous incentives to attract investment, including cash grants, tax holidays, and liberal R&D tax credits. Competitors are also seeking to build world-class research universities and funding basic research in nanotechnology. The U.S. still enjoys a lead in technology, but leadership is not a birthright – it must be earned through action.

“This week we have been celebrating the 60th anniversary of the invention of the transistor – one of America’s greatest contributions to improving productivity and raising the standard of living throughout the world. The invention of the transistor did not happen in isolation. It was the result of a world-class workforce and a culture that encouraged investment in research and development. We need to replicate that model today if we want the invention of the next great world-changing technology to take place on our shores,” Scalise concluded.

About SIA

The SIA is the leading voice for the semiconductor industry and has represented U.S. semiconductor companies since 1977. Collectively, the chip industry employs a domestic workforce of 233,000 people. More information about the SIA can be found at www.sia-online.org.

Two early-stage companies today each won $75,000 in the second annual International and North Coast Nanotechnology Business Idea Competitions held on the campus of Case Western Reserve University.

CLEVELAND, October 21, 2005 – Two early-stage companies today each won $75,000 in the second annual International and North Coast Nanotechnology Business Idea Competitions held on the campus of Case Western Reserve University.

AeroClay of Cleveland and Keystone Nano of State College, Penn., beat out four other finalists in the competitions. AeroClay, which is being formed by Case professor Dr. David Schiraldi, won the North Coast competition for the best business idea from Northeast Ohio and Keystone Nano, a medical imaging and drug delivery company based on research done at Penn State University, won the international competition. A panel of judges featuring representatives of venture capital firms, corporations and nanotechnology researchers trimmed the field of 13 semifinalists to six on Thursday, October 20.
The finalists presented to the judges and a crowd of about 30 onlookers this morning.

AeroClay is the name Schiraldi has given the product he developed by freeze drying clay. The resulting material is 98% air and 2% clay, according to Schiraldi, who is an associate professor in Case’s Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering. AeroClay can be used in packaging or can be covered in a polymer to create lightweight materials for automobiles or other products.
Schiraldi, who has taught at Case for nearly four years after working in the chemical industry for more than 20 years, said the $75,000 will be used to hire a market development employee who can help transform his idea into a business.
“I considered myself kind of a long shot in the competition because we were the least far along in the process of forming a company around the idea,” he said.

Keystone Nano also is in the early stages of building its company.
“We’ll leverage this to help the business catch up to the science,” said Jeff Davidson, chief executive of Keystone Nano. “The science is outstanding.”

Winning the International Nanotechnology Business Idea Competition provides important validation for its technology, said Mark Kester, chief medical officer for Keystone Nano. Kester is also a professor at the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Penn.
“We’ve got some momentum now and we’re going to take advantage of it,” Kester said.
The company has developed Molecular Dots that can deliver both drugs and imaging solutions inside a patient’s body. The Molecular Dots are so tiny that they don’t prompt a response from the body’s immune system and can work more effectively than other internal drug delivery or imaging systems.

The company is pursuing funding from the federal government and outside investors. It also is also pursuing partnerships with pharmaceutical companies that would use the Molecular Dots to deliver their drugs.
Organizers of the competition include three Case Western Reserve University programs: The Institute for Management and Engineering (TiME), the Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Program (STEP), and InTICE: the Institute for Technology Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship; and NorTech’s Nano-Network. Sponsors include ASM International, Nanofilm, Ferro Corp., Case, Forest City Enterprises, The Partnerships for Innovation Program of the National Science Foundation and the Joseph P. & Nancy F. Keithley Foundation.

“Last year the contestants were good, but this year they were even better,” said Cyrus Eaton, director of InTICE. “The judges had to make some very hard decisions.” More than 30 companies from eight countries entered the competition.
Three of the finalists were from Northeast Ohio.
“The local entrants went toe-to-toe with the rest of the world,” said Gary Wnek, co-director of The Institute for Management and Engineering (TiME) at Case Western Reserve University. “Their presentations were excellent.”
Last year’s top winner of the competition, QD Vision of Watertown, Mass., recently raised about $6 million in venture capital from Highland Capital Partners.
“I wouldn’t be surprised at all if a few of our finalists today are able to attract venture capital in the near future,” Wnek said.
The other finalists were:

• Columbus NanoWorks Inc. of Columbus, Ohio, a developer of magnetic nanoparticles to be used to help detect tumors and isolate stem cells.
• NanoMark LLC of Cleveland, a developer of an in-home asthma monitoring system using nano sensors.
• NanoPatch AC of Twinsburg, a developer of a drug delivery system that uses a patch applied to the patient’s skin.
• Reacta Corp. of

Philadelphia, a maker of nanomaterials that can improve the performance of several products, including laundry detergents.
“The quality of all of the semifinalists made the selection of the winners very difficult,” said Chris Mather, executive director of the Nano-Network and vice president of NorTech. “This competition highlights the many entrepreneurial ideas emerging from nano research labs around the globe and in Northeast Ohio. NorTech’s mission is to stimulate innovation in the region and this competition helps do that, while establishing the region as a global leader in the nanotechnology arena.”
Indeed, Kester of Keystone Nano said winning the international competition provides an added incentive for Keystone to explore opportunities to work more closely with researchers at Case and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and with other nanotechnology companies in Northeast Ohio. Kester was an associate professor at Case in the 1990s.
The competitions concluded NANO Week, a week-long series of events and programs organized by NorTech’s Nano-Network.

$4 million nanotech grant from Governor Beebe brings opportunities to area

Short description

The UA will receive a $4 million grant to help boost nanotechnology facilities,

Article body

The UA will receive a $4 million grant to help boost nanotechnology facilities, research and development on campus, Gov. Mike Beebe announced this month, a move that officials think will bring an abundance of opportunities to the area, according to a UA press release.

"The world is watching these Arkansas scientists, and this research can lead to high-quality, knowledge-based jobs for Arkansans," Beebe said in the press release.

The grant, which came out of the state's General Improvement Fund, will be used to build state-of-the-art facilities and finance the very successful nanotechnology program and faculty that are at the university, said Donald Bobbitt, dean of the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences. Bobbitt is excited about the program and said that it will bring many jobs to Fayetteville and to UA graduates. Nanotech firms, he said, are hiring from all areas of the university.

"These guys are not just hiring from engineering, but they're hiring marketers, accountants and managers, too," he said.

Nanotechnology is essentially the study of the properties of very small amounts of matter, which behave differently than larger amounts, Bobbitt said.

"We have a real army of people working on this campus," Bobbitt said, "and an exceptional faculty." The UA has a large effect on the rest of the state, and nanotechnology can bring in well-paying jobs and revenue to Arkansas, he said.

Research in nanotechnology at the university has led to the founding of local companies, such as Nanomaterials and Nanofabrication Labs, which was created by Xiaogang Peng, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, and NanoMech, founded by mechanical engineering professor Ajay Malshe, according to the press release.

Last year, Jacques Chakhalian, assistant professor of physics, developed a way to "look" at atomic orbitals in complex oxides. He and his colleagues demonstrated for the first time that atomic orbitals change dramatically when interacting with a ferromagnet and a high-temperature superconductor, according to the press release.

The oxide interfaces developed by Chakhalian and his team helped boost oxide interface discoveries to the No. 5 spot for scientific breakthroughs of 2007, according to Science Magazine.

The College of Engineering announced in 2004 the addition of Vijay and Vasundara (Vasu) Varadan, both well-known internationally in nanotechnology and medical circles, according to the press release.

Vijay has developed biosensors that treat disorders such as Parkinson's disease and has researched applications to control blood sugar levels and treat Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy, while Vasu has researched medical sensors and wireless microsensors for monitoring patients at home and in hospitals, according to the press release.

Since Vijay's arrival, the Center for Nano-, Bio- and Info-Technology Sensors and Systems has been created, which recently received part of a $9 million grant from the National Science Foundation, according to the press release.

Greg Salamo, a professor with the UA-OU Center for Semiconductor Physics in Nanostructures, used biomolecular, electronic and superconducting materials to help create faster, more powerful and more reliable electronics that are smaller and require less power to operate, according to the press release. In 2005, the National Science Foundation renewed funding for the center with a six-year, $7.8 million grant.

"Investments in faculty and facilities in nanoscience and technology are key to educating science and engineering students who are preparing for the many challenges our society will continue to face in the next several decades," said Ashok Saxena, dean of the College of Engineering, in the press release.

"This investment by the state will play a key role in incubating new technology-based businesses in Arkansas and will go a long way toward attracting more federal research funds."

'Golden bullet' shows promise for killing common parasite

Short description

Researchers in Australia report development of a new type of gold nanoparticle that destroys the parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis, a potentially serious disease acquired by handling the feces of infected cats or eating undercooked meat. Their so-called “golden bullet” could provide a safer, more effective alternative for treating the disease than conventional drug therapy, they say. The study is scheduled for the Dec. issue of ACS’ Nano Letters, a monthly journal.

www.absbio.com
Toxoplasma gondii, the parasite that causes the disease, infects more than 60 million people in the United States alone. Although most infected people have no symptoms, it can cause serious health problems in pregnant women and individuals such as AIDS patients or organ transplant recipients who have weakened immune systems.

In the new study, Michael Cortie and colleagues attached antibodies to the parasite onto gold nanorods that are activated by laser-light. A group of Toxoplasma-infected animal cells were isolated in cell culture dishes and subsequently exposed to these “golden bullets.”

The cells were then exposed to laser-light, which heated up the “bullets” and destroyed the parasites. The treatment killed about 83 percent of the parasites containing the gold particles, the researchers say. They hope to develop a similar technique for killing the parasite in patients.

February 2, 2007. This year the microscope manufacturer WITec celebrates its 10th anniversary. "A Decade of Innovation in Nanoscale Imaging" describes the extremely successful development of the company. Founded as a spin-off from the University of Ulm, WITec has become an established and global player in high-tech instrumentation. As a specialist in high-resolution microscopy, the company benefits from the exponential growth of the Nanotechnology, Materials Research and Life Sciences markets.

Due to a modular product line and the implementation of various patents, WITec has expanded the frontiers of high resolution microscopy, setting new standards in the areas of sensitivity, speed and user-friendliness. The 28 employees of the privately owned and always profitable company have generated average annual growth rates of 25% over the last 10 years. The economically successful business expansion is focused on the global market, leading to the foundation of a US subsidiary in 2002.

"The reasons for the success of our product line were the implementation of new developments and the consequent accomplishment of the modular product philosophy" says Dr. Joachim Koenen, Managing Director. "The current boom of nanoscale research significantly contributes to our ongoing positive sales growth" says Dr. Klaus Weishaupt, Managing Director, Marketing & Sales. Continuous improvements and diversification will strengthen WITec's leading position in the market. "To secure our leading edge we will work constantly on innovative technologies and will continuously launch new products" says Dr. Olaf Hollricher, Managing Director, Research & Development.

The starting point for the foundation of the company was the development of a new near-field optical microscope in 1997. This instrument produces images with an optical resolution below the diffraction limit. Other types of microscopes soon followed: A Confocal Raman Microscope allows the chemical identification of the sample’s composition, resulting in high resolution images of its chemical properties. Primary fields of application are chemical and pharmaceutical research and materials science. For nano-scale surface topography imaging, an Atomic Force Microscope was introduced for use in nanotechnology research.
