After weeks of looking, there doesn't seem to be a source of information available for companies that have proprietary IT technology in the greentech, cleantech, green nanotech, and other technology areas that have been built to product ready-to-sell. We're talking about environmentally-sensitive remediation, alternative energy, water conservation, cleanup, emissions reduction, energy recovery, insulation, oil-spill recovery, fuel efficiency, LEED construction, effluent reclaiming, and other technologies that nearly everyone agrees will benefit the planet and the human race.

With oil at $120/gallon, production from oil sands (bitumen) now makes sense, and Canada's Alberta province has become the USA's major oil source--creating a boom in Edmonton, Calgary, and Ft. McMurray. Economic councils and governmental centres are in place to foster IT development in these areas, but we're not hearing from the producers of greentech products or those who are looking for specific technology solutions for their green issues.

We're conducting a survey and writing a white paper for our consulting clients on the environmental impact of the oil sands boom in Alberta and would like to include case studies of companies on either side of the border--or offshore from North America--who have products that apply to that field and to the spillover that's taking place in population growth, water supply, construction, and other factors for a climate with a seasonal swing from -50F to +100F (-47C to +38C).

We would also like to hear from companies looking to spend money on these solutions.

In the early 1980s, the state’s General Assembly appointed a legislative study commission to determine how North Carolina could ensure long-term economic benefits from biotechnology.

A yearlong study by the commission concluded that North Carolina needed a private, non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to biotechnology development.

The state legislatures then established the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, headquartered in Research Triangle Park, as the world’s first government-sponsored organization dedicated to developing the biotechnology industry.
Mission

The 66-member staff seeks to provide long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business and education statewide.

The Biotechnology Center is not a site for laboratory research or company incubation. Instead, it works to strengthen the research capabilities of North Carolina’s companies and universities.

This strategy avoids duplication of effort and uses limited resources more efficiently.
Funding

The Biotechnology Center receives nearly all of its funding from the General Assembly. Our state appropriation for FY 06-07 is $13.1 million, and our budget for the year is $17.6 million.

Since 1984 the Biotechnology Center has invested more than $187 million in state monies to develop biotechnology statewide.

MIGHT’s predominant role is to enable consensus building and coordination for Industry-Government partnership in high technology. WHAT IS NANOELECTRONICS?

Microelectronics has changed our world drastically: computers, mobile phones, digital television, DVD players, car navigation and security features, medical screening and health care equipment have all become essential parts of our everyday lives. Nanoelectronics is just the next evolutionary step, as the number of transistors that can be integrated on a single chip reaches one billion, but it indeed represents a revolution marking a dramatic step forward.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM IT?

Products with totally new capabilities will become available for general use, dreams such as intelligent cars, non-invasive health monitoring and disease prevention, homes sensitive and responsive to the needs of the persons living in it will become available to everybody., We will get better control of our health and environment, and over the quality of our food and our air, we will be able to recognise diseases even before symptoms appear, and we will be able to be fully mobile and at the same stay constantly in touch with everybody.

WHY ENIAC?

Such developments will require completely new architectural approaches to deal with the ever increasing levels of complexity required. If the primary knowledge needed for innovation, that is the development of the enabling technology for Nanoelectronics, will be built up and retained in Europe, this will result in enormous benefits to national and regional economies of the EU Member and Associated States, in terms of industrial competitiveness, employment and the resulting general wellbeing of citizens.

A fundamental condition for such knowledge-based European leadership is co-operation and interaction between all key players: European research centres, major producers of semiconductors, materials, equipment and applications, high technology small and medium-sized enterprises, national and regional authorities, universities and financial institutions.

The European Technology Platform on Nanoelectronics and its governing structure European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council (ENIAC) have the mission to bring together all these leading players to develop and implement a coherent European vision, making the best use of European talent and infrastructures to ensure European leadership in shaping our future.

The SustainPack project will extend the limits of fibre based packaging materials through the application of nanotechnologies to put the European industry at the forefront of global fibre-based packaging technology, and to provide users and consumers with more added value packaging choices based on a sustainable resource. The SustainPack project will overcome the challenges of commercialisation of new technologies by:

* identifying what the market actually needs from fibre-based packaging
* conducting applied research directed towards delivering fibre-based packaging solutions that address these market needs
* delivering demonstration projects that prove the technical and commercial viability of the technologies

Project structure

SustainPack is a pull-driven project, focusing on customer and downstream supply chain needs in order to identify and prioritise research requirements and to integrate other key themes such as sustainability, European competitiveness, legislation and policy. The work programme for SustainPack is structured around a series of six Sub-Projects:

* Sub-Project 1 will determine the market needs and therefore provide direction for the applied research projects. Success of SustainPack will be confirmed through a series of demonstration projects with industry partners delivering commercially and technically viable nanotechnology packaging solutions
* Sub-Project 2 will involve the establishment of a nanofacility for the production of cellulose and mineral based nanostructures for use in other research Sub-Projects. The sub-project will deliver lean and effective fibre based materials
* Sub-Project 3 will develop renewable composite films, incorporating fibres materials and renewable plastics, to compete with synthetic polymers
* Sub-Project 4 will develop coating and printing technologies to enhance barriers and other functional properties

A consortium led by QinetiQ Nanomaterials Limited (QNL), a wholly owned QinetiQ subsidiary, is to develop a range of nanomaterials for use in the fight against a broad spectrum of viruses, it was announced today. The two year programme is being funded by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) which has allocated £2m to the project, their largest single investment in science and technology to date.The initial concept was formulated by Dr Guogang Ren at Queen Mary's University of London who discovered that at the nanoscale, certain inorganic materials kill viruses such as SARS and avian flu on contact. Team AVNP, of which Dr Ren is a partner, will develop combinations of nanoparticles and nanocompounds for application to a range of antiviral products such as face masks, air filters and antiviral coatings, making full use of the larger surface area available at the nanoscale. The programme will optimise the effectiveness of nanomaterials and assess their toxicology for different antiviral applications. In addition Team AVNP will restructure the production processes of nanomaterials with the aim of delivering pre-production prototypes.

Key to the programme is the team's unique combination of capabilities in nanomaterials, polymers, toxicology and virology testing that are provided by QNL, Brunel University, Queen Mary's, and Retroscreen Virology Ltd. To develop the applications the Pall Corporation will provide expertise in filtration and Sun Chemical in coatings technology.

Speaking on behalf of Team AVNP, QNL founder and CTO Dr Paul Reip said: "H5N1 Bird Flu is just one of a number of viruses such as SARS that represent a genuine threat across the globe. There is a long term requirement for new and innovative antiviral materials that can be applied to products such as face masks to protect not only frontline staff such as nurses, doctors and paramedics but also the general public.

"Through its most substantial investment in science and technology to date, SEEDA has recognised the strengths of the AVNP team and the potential of nanoparticles to tackle a broad spectrum of viruses.

"The AVNP programme represents a new chapter in the ongoing story of the nanotechnology revolution. Most of the current applications of nanotechnology involve nanopowders, for example using the properties of UV absorption to give UV resistance in sunscreens. This project will exploit additional properties that materials have at the nanoscale to tackle real world crises such as pandemics."

Funding for the programme was provided under a SEEDA programme entitled "Emerging Nanomaterial Technologies in the South East Region." The programme supports new processes and materials in the new field of nanotechnology, and specifically the near to market area of nanomaterials.

Nanotechnology has emerged as the single largest revolutionary science topic of the 21st century. Our objective is to do research that can lead to new discoveries that can provide global solutions to the problems of energy, health, housing, water, and affordable materials processing from recycled products and industrial or agricultural wastes.

USAMI has produced web-learning courses in 10 key areas of materials and Design:

* Introduction to materials science and engineering
* Materials selection and design
* Engineering design
* Structural materials
* Theory of alloys
* Introduction to bioengineering and biomedical devices
* Advanced composite materials
* Fatigue and fracture
* Lab techniques in materials science
* Advanced solid mechanics

Beyond the web-learning courses we have also organized educational workshops in Cape Town, South Africa and Princeton to promote education in materials at all levels. At the K-12 level, we have co-organized summer institutes and academic year programs for minority students in the Princeton area. We have also organized summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs at Princeton as well as in Africa. These are activities that have engaged a diverse group of U.S. students to work on exciting topics in materials whilst developing an informed international prespective.

The USAMI is a virtual institute that was crated in 2003 with sponsorship from the Division of Materials Research of the National Science Foundation. Since then we have organized over 40 visits by African materials researchers to work with their counterparts in the U.S. We have also sponsored visits by U.S. researchers and students to work with their counterparts in Africa, and also attend workshops or conferences in Africa.

So far the USAMI has helped with the organization of U.S./Africa workshops in Arlington, VA and Princeton, NJ, MRS meetings in Johannesburg, Dar-es-Salaam, Monastir, Marrakech, Akure, and Safaga. We have also assisted with the creation of the African MRS chapters in Northern, Eastern, and Western Africa. These workshops have helped to promote the African Materials Network which is now an independent self-sustaining network.
