A new solution for miniaturized organic lasers presented by AMO and IBM

AMO GmbH, Aachen and IBM Research GmbH, Rüschlikon were able to realize and characterize optimized photonic feedback structures for miniaturized organic lasers.

Efficient organic lasers with small footprint structures demonstrate the key components of future integrated photonic devices for both, communication and sensing applications. Furthermore, they offer an attractive packaging possibility for light-emitting arrays coupled to high-density optical interconnects.

AMO, IBM and the University of Wuppertal investigated mixed-order two dimensional photonic crystal laser structures in combination with a high-gain organic polymer in terms of lasing threshold and device footprints. Based on a thin film of high-index tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5), mixed-order structures were identified as superior compared to second-order structures. By combining first-order and second-order photonic crystal structures, losses occurring at the edge of the second order structure could be reduced dramatically, leading to a lower laser threshold and to a much smaller footprint of the laser.

Owing to their excellent optical properties and their huge potential for display, sensing, and solar-cell applications, organic semiconductor materials have attracted increasing interest in recent years. These materials exhibit low lasing thresholds and a spectrally broad gain enabling the emission wavelength to be tuned across the entire visible spectrum.

The research activities of the project partners are based on the 6 FP project OLAS (Organic electrically pumped LASer by engineering of heterojunctions in field-effect devices). The project aims at achieving foundational research on Organic Electrically Pumped Laser.

AQUANOVA produces so-called solubilisates GMP-orientated, based on its own product development in Darmstadt, from raw substances which are insoluble in water or fat.

In contrast to the raw substances contained in them, the solubilisates can be processed to end products for the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical sectors without the addition of additives and without any further processing steps and without a matrix design. Also after the addition of solubilisates, transparent end products remain stably clear and transparent with optimum homogeneity.

Along with its other products, AQUANOVA produces the world's first chemically unmodified fat-soluble and water-soluble ascorbic acid (vit. C). As a result, vit. C (the most prominent antioxidant) can take the path, long sought after by science and industry, into fats, oils and emulsions.

Also, the incorporation of this solubilisate into, for example, vegetable and fish oils (up to 2,000 ppm of pure vit. C) occurs without additives or matrix design. In a compound, also developed by AQUANOVA, up to 20,000 ppm of pure vit. C can be incorporated into vegetable oils. The vit. C solubilisate can be integrated almost without restriction into emulsified end products.

Chemically modified ascorbic acid, such as ascorbic palmitate, can in contrast only be incorporated with the aid of additives and thermal treatment up to a maximum of 250 ppm in end products and may not be declared as vit. C.

The company ASMEC AdvancedSurface MEChanics GmbH was founded on 18. December 2003 in Rossendorf close to the Saxon capital Dresden. It is located in the Rossendorfer Technologiezentrum (ROTECH), which offers an optimum environment for technology oriented newly founded companies.
The ASMEC GmbH is a spin-off from the Institute of Physics of the University of Technology Chemnitz and was established by Dr. Thomas Chudoba who has been working in the field of mechanical surface properties and contact mechanics for many years.
The objective of the company is the development and supply of software, hardware and measurement as well as optimisation services, which have a relation to surface mechanics. The activities are especially focused on thin coatings in the range from some micrometers down to a few nanometers. The staff members of ASMEC have a lot of experiences in this working area. There is still a very close collaboration with the local universities and Fraunhofer institutes. The ASMEC GmbH is a member of the German Competence Center "Ultrathin Functional Films" and the European Society of Thin Films.
The most important measurement method applied by the company is nanoindentation (Instrumented Indentation Test). This method allows determining hardness, Young's modulus or yield strength of surfaces and thin films. Based on the nanoindentation principle the first own instrument - a Universal Nanomechanical Tester (UNAT) - was recently developed. This device is extending the capabilities of other commercial nanoindenters by a second measuring head for the measurement of lateral forces and displacements with high resolution. It helps to close an existing gap in the simulation of real tribological conditions in laboratory environment.
Experiences, which are obtained during the processing of measurement service orders, will directly be used for the development of the own instrument. Measurements are completed by three-dimensional stress calculations for coated systems with fast analytical algorithms. This allows a real optimisation of coatings in respect of mechanical durability. The required software is developed in the company as well.

Die Firma ASMEC Advanced Surface MEChanics GmbH wurde am 18. Dezember 2003 mit Sitz in Radeberg bei Dresden gegründet. Sie befindet sich im Rossendorfer Technologiezentrum (ROTECH), das neu gegründeten technologieorientierten Unternehmen ein gutes Umfeld bietet.

Das wichtigste Messverfahren im Unternehmen ist der registrierende Eindruckversuch (englisch: Nanoindentation) mit dem mechanische Parameter wie Härte, Elastizitätsmodul oder Fließgrenze ermittelt werden können. Auf Basis dieses Verfahrens wurde bis April 2005 das erste eigene Messgerät entwickelt, der Universelle Nanomechanische Tester (UNAT). Er erweitert die Einsatzmöglichkeiten gegenüber anderen kommerziellen Geräten dieses Typs durch Nutzung eines zweiten Messkopfes für die hochauflösende Erzeugung und Messung lateraler Kräfte. Damit wurde eine bestehende Lücke bei der Nachbildung tribologischer Systeme im Labormaßstab geschlossen.
Erfahrungen, die bei der Bearbeitung von Messdienstleistungen anfallen, fließen unmittelbar in die Entwicklung des eigenen Gerätes ein. Messungen werden ergänzt durch dreidimensionale Spannungsberechnungen in Schichtsystemen auf Basis schneller analytischer Algorithmen. Sie erlauben erstmals eine mechanische Optimierung von Schichtsystemen. Die entsprechende Software wird ebenfalls im Unternehmen entwickelt.

Our special production technology and the high quality of NanoSilver BG allows a very homogenous and intimate distribution of particles in the material. An efficient antimicrobial surface-activity is achieved by only minor additions. Already the nanoporous silver shows a considerably better surface value than competitor products which results in a superior antimicrobial behaviour. This effect can even be enhanced severalfold by using Bio-GateВґs nanodispersen silver formulation.

Elemental silver can be introduced into polymers more easily and more homogeneously if applied in fine particle distribution. Smaller silver particles do expose a higher surface so that superior antiinfective surfaces can be created. Likewise the same antiinfective properties can be achieved with less silver if it is applied in finer distribution.

Producing such fine particles is a rather sophisticated task. Bio-Gate produces a nanoporous silver powder in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Applied Materials Research (IFAM). The powder is used to give products new antiinfective properties. The primary particle size is between 50 nm and 100 nm. Since the particles aggregate spontaneously, nanoporous particles with a size between 5-10 m are formed. This high porosity of the silver material also allows a very intimate contact between the metal and the polymer into which it was compounded. Vacuum vaporization and recondensation on a continuous liquid film allows for the production of even finer particles. Average particles sizes down to 5 nm can be achieved, reminding rather of an atom cluster than of a macroscopic particle. Thus silver in extremely fine distribution can be compounded into polymer formulations leading to new nanocomposite materials.

Since also the silver can be distributed more homogenously, product quality and security are enhanced. Even by international standards Bio-Gate nanosilver is unique and of the highest quality. Chemically, since also the production process is a pure physical one, the resulting material behaves very homogeneously. There is no need for further purification steps so that the nanosilver can be applied immediately. Given the right formulation silver ions are set free at levels sufficient to kill microbes on the surface of a medical device. To avoid unwanted toxic side effects the silver dosage can be lowered to the product- or application-specific optimum.
