The project brings together leading academic and industrial partners, each of which has a distinct role or skill in the project. A key strength of AMBIO is the unification of these partners into a coordinated, interdisciplinary programme incorporating all the necessary research elements from polymer chemistry and nanosurface engineering technologies to biological evaluation, coatings development and end-user trials.
The AMBIO network of 31 partners (10 Universities, 15 companies, 6 research organisations) also covers the full value chain from basic science to application, development, manufacturing and commercialisation, culminating in key customers for the designated fields of application. Partners mainly from universities and research institutions will work on the development and characterisation of novel nanostructured surfaces and understanding of how they function in controlling biofouling. Industrial partners will mainly focus on the manufacturing and application of innovative products. AMBIO will effectively commercialise its developments, especially with the strong contribution of SMEs in development and manufacturing.
Twelve EU Member States are represented as well as Turkey and Israel.

The 5-year project has a total budget of € 17.9 million of which € 11.9 million is funded by the European Community, and it started on March 1st 2005.

The academic research position in the field of nanoscience is rather weak in Europe, although the global nanotechnology and industry is experiencing a rapid growth. In order to pace up with the considerable technology advances in the USA and Japan, Framework Six established that it is especially desirable to combine existing skills of European research institutions in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The dynamical effects govern the performance of future nanoscale devices therefore it is important to develop efficient methods for their characterization.

The study of dynamics in nanostructures requires a special methodology. Nuclear resonant scattering (NRS) of synchrotron radiation is one of the methods of right sensitivity to explore ultra thin films, surfaces, cluster and other nanostructures. In order to understand the size dependence and interplay between different excitation mechanisms, the present project aims at studies of different dynamical aspects, such as diffusion, phonons and magnetization dynamics on carefully selected model-nanostructures. These goals require instrumentation and software developments of available facilities related to experiments using the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France.

The work is organized in work packages corresponding to classes of phenomena and procedures for different systems. The project requires development of experimental tools and methodologies related to experiments using the ESRF beam lines. Pioneering experiments will be performed with novel tools in-situ in ultra high vacuum (UHV) conditions. The samples will be prepared and carefully characterized using various complementary methods in the partners laboratories before being investigated at the beam lines of the synchrotron facility.

The European Federation of Biophysics is structured so as to avoid the pitfalls of profit motivation, biased promotion of a selected competing product, inadequate scientific backing, and unwarranted protection of entrenched political or medical interests. It functions as a network of collegial individuals extending from basic physicists, self-trained highly creative thinkers, experts in both traditional and alternative healing arts, engineers, and suppliers of various products and devices.

To encourage this free flow of information, faculty members are fully committed to neither disclose or to commercially use information received in confidence from another member. Rather, the intent is to establish cooperative group relationships with individuals pursuing similar goals and to use the collective wisdom and expertise of such groups to inform and guide the pursuits of other faculty members.

Recognition by fellow faculty members of one's scientific accomplishments and one's commitment to the overall mission of the Institute is to be highly valued. Future faculty appointments will be made upon the unanimous approval of those faculty members with related interests and expertise.

Departments will be organized around central themes with regular reporting of progress and requests for problem solving assistance. By working together, many of the obstacles commonly encountered by researchers pursuing controversial topics can be overcome.

Moreover, valuable clinical observations using energy-based therapies can be subjected to formal clinical trials leading to licensure and more open and widespread usage. An integrated approach will achieve far more than the sum of separate individual efforts. While the Institute will clearly be prosperous for its members, the real beneficiary will be the vast number of patients who are currently inappropriately served by conventional medicine.

The Institute will use its resources to foster research endeavors of its members and to provide a measure of financial security to those who have been willing to freely contribute their expertise and passion in a collaborative endeavor. The European Molecular Biology Laboratory [EMBL] is an international research organisation with its main laboratory in Heidelberg [Germany], and four outstations in Hinxton, [UK] [the European Bioinformatics Institute, EBI], Grenoble [France], Hamburg [Germany], and Monterotondo [Italy].

The main laboratory in Heidelberg was inaugurated in 1978 as the first EMBL facility dedicated to basic molecular biology research, technology development, service provision and advanced training. Today more than 750 staff members are working at EMBL Heidelberg in five research units [Cell Biology and Biophysics, Developmental Biology, Gene Expression, Structural and Computational Biology and Directors' Research, covering two independent research groups headed by the Director General of EMBL and the Executive Director of EMBO], service facilities and administration.

Research at EMBL emphasizes experimental analysis at multiple levels of biological organisation, from the molecule to the organism, as well as computational biology, bioinformatics and systems biology. Research is supported by the development of enabling technologies that are made available to the scientific community in core facilities like for e.g. genomics, electron microscopy, advanced light microscopy, and proteomics. Many scientific breakthroughs have been made at EMBL Heidelberg, most notably the first systematic genetic analysis of embryonic development in the fruit fly by Christiane Nüsslein-Vollhard and Erich Wieschaus, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1995.

Outstanding training is available at multiple levels: predoctoral students, postdocs and visiting scientists are provided with exceptional training opportunities. Many courses, conferences and workshops are organised in collaboration with EMBL's sister organisation, the European Molecular Biology Organisation [EMBO]. Young scientists are trained at EMBL for a limited time before the majority of them move back to their home countries. As a result of its unique turnover policy, EMBL has become the major advanced training centre for molecular biology in Europe.

Heidelberg is the largest centre for biomedical research in Germany and home to the oldest German university, the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. Many bilateral links between scientists at EMBL and the other Heidelberg research institutions have been established. In addition to many bilateral collaborations, EMBL participates in several larger projects: the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit, a pilot project established in 2002 between the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg and EMBL; the BIOMS project in collaboration with the University of Heidelberg, the German Cancer Research Centre [DKFZ], the Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research and the European Media Lab [EML Research]; a joint Chemical Biology Core Facility for small molecule screening that was established together with the German Cancer Research Centre [DKFZ] in 2004.

A very active Science and Society Programme and other outreach activities promote a better and broader understanding of the growing social and cultural relevance of the life sciences through a variety of activities and events where members of the scientific community, scholars from other disciplines, as well as members of the public meet to engage in a dialogue.

WHAT IS NANOELECTRONICS?

Microelectronics has changed our world drastically: computers, mobile phones, digital television, DVD players, car navigation and security features, medical screening and health care equipment have all become essential parts of our everyday lives. Nanoelectronics is just the next evolutionary step, as the number of transistors that can be integrated on a single chip reaches one billion, but it indeed represents a revolution marking a dramatic step forward.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM IT?

Products with totally new capabilities will become available for general use, dreams such as intelligent cars, non-invasive health monitoring and disease prevention, homes sensitive and responsive to the needs of the persons living in it will become available to everybody., We will get better control of our health and environment, and over the quality of our food and our air, we will be able to recognise diseases even before symptoms appear, and we will be able to be fully mobile and at the same stay constantly in touch with everybody.

WHY ENIAC?

Such developments will require completely new architectural approaches to deal with the ever increasing levels of complexity required. If the primary knowledge needed for innovation, that is the development of the enabling technology for Nanoelectronics, will be built up and retained in Europe, this will result in enormous benefits to national and regional economies of the EU Member and Associated States, in terms of industrial competitiveness, employment and the resulting general wellbeing of citizens.

A fundamental condition for such knowledge-based European leadership is co-operation and interaction between all key players: European research centres, major producers of semiconductors, materials, equipment and applications, high technology small and medium-sized enterprises, national and regional authorities, universities and financial institutions.

The European Technology Platform on Nanoelectronics and its governing structure European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council (ENIAC) have the mission to bring together all these leading players to develop and implement a coherent European vision, making the best use of European talent and infrastructures to ensure European leadership in shaping our future.

The integrated project PACE will explore the utilization of the simplest technically feasible elementary living units (artificial cells much simpler than current cells) to build evolvable complex information systems. We will create, analyse and investigate the applications of such systems that process information by self-organization starting at molecular scales. We will also determine whether life-like properties are necessary for computational systems to be fully robust and adaptive and investigate the tension between evolvable living autonomy and programmable utilization.. We will explore the collective properties of artificial cells and demonstrate that they are the right material for building nanoscale robot ecologies. The particular molecular systems we will consider will have genetically controlled catalytic reactions, self-assembly of complex supramolecular structures, and energy transduction. We will investigate the stepwise evolution of such complex systems by machine complementation and combinatorial search using a programmable microfluidic interface. We will provide theoretical and simulation frameworks for understanding emergent computational properties of such systems, and experimental frameworks for programming them by evolutionary exploration of chemical reactions. We will integrate and disseminate multidisciplinary European activities to give it a decisive international competitive advantage in this FET.

Current and future concerns related to agrofood safety and quality will increasingly require a multidisciplinary and universal approach based on the massive use of simple detection systems able to be used "near to the foodstuff". The technology used nowadays to assess food safety and quality relies on lab solutions that are bulky, costly, punctual and time consuming. On the contrary, GoodFood approach will comply, through the development of innovative M&NT solutions, with the needs of ubiquity, low cost and low power, fast response, simple use and fully interconnection to the decisional bodies. A multidisciplinary integration of know-how and technology is required for addressing the broad requirements of the agrofood field. An Integrated Project is proposed to keep such a global view. The Project aims at the vertical integration of Micro and Nano Technologies from the land to the market. The main demands identified by the agrofood sector will be the applications that will drive the technological developments within GoodFood. The need for increasing the control of products at different critical steps of the food chain (control of raw materials, improvement of food processing, monitoring of storage and logistics, and control of safety and quality of final products) will be addressed by GoodFood with a vertical and horizontal integration of food, bio, and electronics experience for developing a set of systems with clear breakthrough solutions to specific safety and quality and traceability requirements. The proposed solutions will be also integrated under an Ambient Intelligence approach, which will allow fully interconnection and communication of multisensing systems. The technological developments within GoodFood are driven by the main demands identified by the agrofood sector, and they are focused into a number of relevant food targets. The M&NT inspired solutions developed therein are foreseen as the stepping-stones of the long term GoodFood vision: "bringing the lab to the food stuff from the land to the market."

Before the start of the project we shared the feeling that the expertise for handling and using high-resolution focused ion beams was lacking. We assembled a team of people who already knew each other well and were willing to tackle this challenge. One decisive issue concerning the way to build the project was the meeting in the middle of the year 2000 between R. Jede (Raith GmbH) expert in electron lithography systems and wafer navigation and J. Gierak (CNRS-L2M) who has been developing FIB systems and liquid metal ion sources during the previous years. The discussions rapidly concentrated on the possibility of building a FIB nano-tool. This led to the suggestion that an innovative Focused Ion Beam system having breakthrough patterning potential should be developed. We decided to prepare a proposal for an EC project with an interdisciplinary group of scientists (applied physics, applied chemistry, theoretical physics and SMEs). The proposal was based on our respective and complementary knowledge in the development of instruments and our large expertise within different application fields. Luckily the EC shared our interest and funded the project (Contract G5RD-CT2000-0034). Thanks again from this side to the EC for supporting our "crazy idea" and the scientific officers for their support, advice and "tips".

17 industrial companies and 7 research centres and European universities participate in this research project called "IP NANOKER – Structural Ceramic Composites for Top-End Functional Applications"

The overall objective of this Integrated Project (IP) is to provide and industrialize knowledge-based nanoceramics ( under 100 nm) and nanocomposites (second phases under 10 nm) for top-end functional and structural applications which are beyond reach with incremental materials development only. Many new technological advances are limited by the impossibility to combine high mechanical performances of actually known ceramic materials with critical functional or structural material properties. "Nanocomposites", entirely made up ceramic and metallic nanoscale particles or nanoscale phases, denote a broad, new class of engineered materials where unique and otherwise unattainable properties can be revealed.

The industrial applications of nanocomposites rely on the successful consolidation of these materials into bulk-sized components while preserving their nanostructures. Traditional consolidation techniques have strong limitations of not being able as they are not able to retain the nanoscale grain size. The technological objectives and expected breakthroughs of IP NANOKER will consist of:

• New multifunctional materials with outstanding hardness, fracture resistance and fracture toughness operating in chemical-physically aggressive environments.

• New multifunctional materials processed into knowledge-based, industrially applicable nanoceramics and nanocomposites with added multifunctionality, e.g. biocompatible functions and very long lifetime, optical properties, tribochemical functions and excellent electrical conductivity, nanocoatings with tribological and barrier functions, etc.
