ADE Phase Shift is a wholly owned subsidiary of ADE Corporation (Nasdaq: ADEX). As a company we design and build high precision systems for measuring the flatness, roughness and shape of advanced technology surfaces.

ADE Phase Shift was founded in Tucson as Phase Shift Technology, Inc. in 1987, by Chris Koliopoulos, Ph.D. and David Basila. The company soon offered a variety of interferometry-based products, including fringe analysis software, laser-based Fizeau interferometers, and microscope-based white light interferometers.
Interferometers use the natural wave properties of light, reflected from a surface to be tested, to map the tiniest surface height variations. Using interferometry, telescope mirror manufacturers gauge the quality and focus of their mirrors, and disk drive manufacturers make sure the platters used in computer disk drives are flat enough to withstand the high speeds and close quarters of the interior of a computer drive. It was Phase Shift interferometers that were used by the company that made the lenses that fixed the orbital Hubble telescope's blurred vision.

In 1998, Phase Shift Technology merged with Massachusetts-based ADE Corporation, a manufacturer of metrology equipment for the semiconductor and data storage industries. Since that time, the company has been called ADE Phase Shift.

ADE Phase Shift now makes products with applications for the measuring of the surface topology of polished silicon wafers, as well as systems for measuring critical surfaces in the hard disk industry, and many needs of optics manufacturers.

SARFUS is a new quantitative surface imaging technique based on the association of 2 elements:
- A conventional optical microscope (reflection mode, white light illumination) in SARFUS configuration.
- Special sample supporting plates called Surfs.

Surfs are special supporting plates with exceptional optical properties. The sample deposition process is the same as on a conventional glass slide. There are two main kinds of Surfs. The most common one is Standard Surf, which has a glass-mimicking surface (Silica). Hydrophobic Surfs have the same characteristics as Standard Surfs, except that an organic surface treatment has been carried out, making them hydrophobic.

SARFUS increases the axial sensitivity of optical microscopy by a factor 10 to 100, allowing direct visualization of nanometric films and detection of nanometer-sized isolated objects. It is easy to use, non invasive and it allows real-time studies.

On top of our visualization solution, we have developed a software solution permitting to measure sample thickness in the 1-50nm range based on our calibration standard. It is complemented by a 3D display software which gives direct access to the sample topography and allows measuring the local thickness of ultra-thin films.

Thus, it paves the way towards advances in various fields, such as surface treatment and functionnalization, thin layers crystallization, supported membranes, wetting, Langmuir-Blodgett layers, biochips, biopolymers, nanotubes, Soft-lithography …

IATIA's QPI technology was developed by Professor Keith Nugent, then Head of the School of Physics at the University of Melbourne and an inaugural Federation Fellow, and his research team.

IATIA's QPI algorithm utilises the inter-relationship between phase and amplitude (intensity) for a propagating wave.

Similar mathematical techniques apply to reflection images, where the sample surface profile is imprinted on the wavefront. The combination of conventional lateral and wavefront depth inputs provide 3-dimensional shape information.

While phase enhancement systems are available for improved sample contrast and visualisation in certain fields, such as optically microscopy, they are not convenient or commonplace for other radiations. Moreover, where available, the phase enhancement systems constrain the sample types and experimental configurations available. Additionally, the amplitude and phase components remain mixed so that interpretation remains confusing.

IATIA's mathematical solution for phase characterisation allows the generation of phase information of a broad range of radiations and is not limited by the experimental constraints of physical configurations. QPI is able to bring phase data analysis to a large range of industries and fields while utilising their current imaging capabilities.
