Synthetic Bone Graft for Biomedical Load- bearing Applications

This new material and its production technique represent a significant advance on the materials currently available for bone graft and spinal implant technology.

The new product, BioAlmog, is a high-strength bone-graft material derived from hydroxyapatite. It has innovative features that give it specific advantages in its mechanical properties, in comparison to other commercially available hydroxyapatite products.

These advantages are due to the conversion treatment, and the nano-coating with carbonate apatite, which uses a novel sol-gel technique. The new bone-graft technology will be of great social benefit, particularly for sufferers of arthritis and related disabling diseases.

Potential uses for the technology include bone-grafting under load-bearing conditions, such as long bones and the spine, and bioactive coatings for artificial joints, such as total hip replacements, knee and dental implants.

When you consider that an estimated 500 million people worldwide have various forms of arthritis, you can see the great potential of BioAlmog to help these people. We developed this technology at UTS, Sydney and are collaborating with UNSW and a university in the UK.

Combidex is our investigational molecular imaging agent consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles for use in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to aid in the differentiation of cancerous from non-cancerous lymph nodes. Combidex received an approvable letter, subject to certain conditions, from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in June 2000. Ferumoxytol, the next-generation product in our development pipeline, is currently in Phase III multi-center clinical trials for use as an iron replacement therapeutic in anemic chronic kidney disease patients, whether or not on dialysis. RTD activities consist of studying the chemistry and physics of nanostructures including semiconductor QDs and optically active composite materials based on inorganic nanoparticles. Primary scientific interest of the group now lies in the chemical synthesis of highly luminescent colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals and their utilization as novel type of fluorescent materials for biological applications.
Head of NFM Ltd is Dr. Oleg Sharapov, Ph.D. in Economical Sciences. Dr. Sharapov has directed diverse technological and scientific projects ranging from gas production, where he was a Director of company working with the GAZPROM holding, to development of anticancer drugs in collaboration with Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences.
