USGN recently launched the S.A.G. ('Save A Gunner') Armored Turret System for mounting on High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWV), of which there are currently over 150,000 deployed around the world. The S.A.G. Turret weighs less than 200 pounds and offers significant ballistic protection to exposed personnel.

Todays dismounted infantry soldier carries a back-breaking load, usually 100-140 pounds, and still has insufficient ballistic protection, little defense against chemical and biological weapons, and too many pieces of equipment that don’t work well together. The ISNs challenge is to transform today’s cotton/nylon fatigues and bulky equipment belts to a sleek, lightweight battlesuit that provides everything from responsive armor to medical monitoring to communications and more, in one integrated system.

Nanotechnology fits into this vision in two important ways. First, it offers the potential for miniaturization, a key part of reducing weight. Todays hefty radio worn on a harness might be reduced to a button-sized tab on the collar. And a waterproof poncho could be replaced by a permanent nano-thin coating applied to everything the soldier carries. Secondly, because nanotechnology operates at length scales where classical macroscopic physics breaks down, it offers engineers the potential for creating unprecedented new materials properties and devices. Nanotechnology can solve problems that scientists have been struggling with for decades.

Nomadics nanotechnology cultivation efforts currently focus on two general kinds of applications. First, our scientists were the first to demonstrate and report on the property of photostimulated luminescence (PSL) in nanoparticles.

Simply put, nanoparticles emit light in response to exposure to various types of energy. Potential applications include safer, higher resolution x-ray films, radiation dosimeters, optical storage devices, light-emitting diodes, and in vivo imaging probes. Similar principles can be harnessed to produce energy upon exposure to light, for photovoltaic and other applications. Nomadics is currently conducting research in all of these areas, funded by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation.

A second broad area of interest is the assembly of nanostructures. NomadicsО® work in this arena includes development of special coatings that provide protection against corrosion without posing the environmental risks common to many of the coatings used by the aerospace, automotive, pipeline, and other industries. We are exploring the use of specific nanostructures such as nanowires for miniaturized circuits and carbon nanotubes for ultra-high-strength lightweight composites. We have coated individual nanoparticles for use as sensor probes, catalysts, drug delivery agents, and other applications where their small size is a benefit.

Raytheon's Nanoelectronics branch develops future-generation analog and digital technologies for commercial and defense applications in radar, communications, and sensor processing. Our technology base includes InP-based resonant tunnel diodes (RTDs), heterojunction field effect (HEMTS) and bipolar (HBT) transistors, and a production-compatible integrated circuit fabrication process supported by a 6,000-square-foot Class 100 clean room.

We have demonstrated the first analog-to-digital converters in this technology, and are developing digital microwave memories (TSRAM), direct digital synthesizers, and data routers. Future programs will develop detectors and sources for terahertz (1000 GHz) applications.
