For 200 years the basic theory of obtaining electricity from the energy potential which exists between different materials has been the foundation upon which the advances have been made in technology. Military capability and scientific developments depend upon batteries and space exploration, manned or unmanned would be impossible without them. Over this time, enormous resources of time, research and money have gone into finding the most efficient and viable materials which can give the greater power needed to open the gates for the vast range of products and developments waiting in the wings.

Many different combinations of materials and construction have been investigated and the advances which have been made in the last 30 years have been remarkable, but there is still a demand for even higher power ratings. Some of the combinations have proved effective but have proved subsequently to be dangerous to our environment and have been banned on ecological and environmental grounds.

In 1989, Ab Europositron was founded to pursue a radical new theory which had been propounded by Mr Rainer Partanen concerning one of the materials which had been investigated before but had always run into the same difficulties, namely the apparently insurmountable problem recharging a sealed cell battery using aluminium. Rainer Partanen has progressed the theory to the point of detailed specifications of cell construction, the electrochemistry involved and has registered patents covering all the necessary areas.

The fundamental basis of the Partanen technology can be applied to all formats of batteries, from tiny button batteries to high capacity stand-by power supplies. Using one of the most abundant metals available and incorporating existing manufacturing processes, this is an avenue which demands and deserves investigation to fruition.

The efficiency of the DECTM Cell stems from its single step capture-and-conversion method. DECTM Cells use energy produced from the decay of a radioactive isotope, not a chemical reaction. The Company's patented architecture - based on the same physical principles that are employed in solar cells - and the selection of beta emitters ensures a power source that emits no radiation and is safer than chemical batteries for a broad variety of industrial and medical applications.

A key innovation is the distribution of the beta emitter energy source throughout the DECTM Cell volume. This means that the current generation is not just a surface effect, but occurs everywhere within the active volume. Thus, DECTM current sources are extremely efficient, converting a large fraction of the available decay energy into electric current. The first and second generations of tritium-powered BetaBatteriesTM are expected to produce 50- and 125-micro-Watts per cubic centimeter of active device volume, respectively.

BetaBatteryTM current sources are long-lasting, based on the selection of the beta source. Tritium has a half-life (T½) equal to 12.3 years. This means that after 12.3 years, the current output will be half its original value and a tenth of the original after 40 years. This productive life is orders of magnitude longer than chemical batteries. The decline in output for DECTM power cells will be quite predictable and can be accommodated by appropriate electronics design for each specific application.

Ion-containing polymers, also known as ionomers or polyelectrolytes, have many important applications in a variety of technologies. Dentro de las diversas actividades que consumen gran cantidad de energía, se encuentran las industrias, estimándose en algunos países que alrededor del 35% de la energía total consumida en los edificios públicos, corresponde a las grandes industrias.

Así, la gran responsabilidad que se tiene al trabajar para la colectividad, determina que en las industrias generalmente se sobredimensionen la capacidad de energía disponible, con respecto a la demandada por las mismas para evitar a toda costa la falta de confiabilidad de las instalaciones energéticas.

Es común encontrar entonces varios transformadores, las bombas de agua, dos o más enfriadores y grandes capacidades de cogeneración ociosas en la parte del tiempo.

Por todo lo anterior, resulta habitual el derroche de las dos fuentes de energía principales presentes en las industrias: eléctrica y térmica.

Excellatron (www.excellatron.com) is introducing innovative and enabling energy storage technology. This technology provides the basis for micro batteries, nano batteries, and other nano technology applications. These batteries have the potential for high energy and high power (4 to 10 times that available in traditional battery technologies). These batteries are also intrinsically safe. They can withstand high temperatures (up to 300ºC). The batteries can also be made to any size and shape desired. They can also be flexible for credit card applications. They are also ideal for asset tracking applications

Markets for this technology include military applications, implantable medical devices, and other applications that require high performance. This technology will also enable a series of new products where existing battery technology cannot compete, e.g., Smart Cards, active Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, and Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS).

Excellatron has moved thin film battery technology far beyond laboratory development and has created the state of the art production technology that makes thin film batteries commercially viable. With our progress in Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition (PECVD) production technology, the cost of TFB (thin film batteries) manufacturing will be significantly reduced. We believe that Excellatron's thin film batteries will play a significant role in the emerging active smart card and RFID tag markets for both civilian and military applications, including Homeland Security related applications.
