Feet in two camps

Getting funded

In the present climate, equity finance is tight in Silicon Valley, as everywhere. The IPO exit path is closed. Venture Capital firms are gun-shy and demanding more equity and power. Many investors are not sufficiently informed about nanotechnology.

However, on a regional basis in 2002, Silicon Valley led the field with $280 million in Small Tech VC funding, against the entire New England region a distant second at only $170 million. Some investors are prepared to take a long-term view, investing to build businesses rather than focusing on near-term exit strategy.

Founders must be able to show a compelling product or proof of concept, experienced management, proprietary intellectual property, and a path to near-term revenue and profit.

Seraphima Ventures LLC is focusing on mainly nanotechnology startup companies with existing products, not blue sky research. The current venture capital business models are not appropriate for investing in Nanotechnology. We are proposing a new business model which combines the best of both worlds of venture capital and angel investing which is a more hands-on approach to managing companies to success. Seraphima is a play on the word "seraphim", an angel, for the investment approach of this fund. This does not mean we are limited to funding with angel money.

Why Nanotechnology?

Nanotechnologies have potential to add significant value in performance and eventually lower cost to many products across all sectors. These commercial benefits are happening much sooner than most people think.

President Bush in his January 2006 State of the Union address says he wishes to double funding in R&D including nanotechnology. By the end of 2005, governments spent US$18 Billion of taxpayer money into nanotech R&D. US$6 Billion are forecast for 2006. President Bush signed the Nanotech bill on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 for US$3.7 Billion over the next 4 years starting 2005 for nanotech research. This does not even include the nanotechnology funding set aside for military and defense related applications. The signing of the bill by President Bush makes nanotechnology the highest federally funded basic science and technology effort since the space race. The US only makes up about 25% of the global government spending on nanotech research with Japan just slightly ahead of the US. An NSF report states that Nanotech has the potential to grow to a US$1 Trillion per year industry.

Venture capital investment for nanotechnology rose strongly in 2005, with institutional venture capitalists devoting $480 million into nanotechnology startups up from $410 million in 2004. Venture capital spending in nanotech from 1999-2002 was close to US$900 Million with US$386 Million in 2002 and dipped to about $325 million in 2003. Immunicon went public in April 2004 with a market cap of $182 million after raising $86 million in venture capital. On the other hand, life sciences company Invitrogen of Carlsbad, Calif., bought Quantum Dot Corporation for $26 million in 2005 after the startup burned through $40 million in venture funding. Nanosys announced an IPO in April 2004 but withdrew shortly thereafter in August 2004. A US$38 Million second round went to Nanosys and US$22 Million went to Nanostream Spring 2003. $17.5 Million Series B round went to Zettacore lead by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byer and US$30 Million Series B round went to Molecular Imprints just before the end of 2003. These are just a sampling of some of the bigger venture funding deals done. Only 9% of nanotechnology venture capital deals have exited.

However, venture capital funding of nanotech remains "outstripped by corporate R&D spending and government funding by a factor of 19 times" (Nordan, Lux Research).

Our research in 2003 showed over 20,000 patents issued in nanotech explicitly which means there are many more because much of nanotech isn't called nanotech. Highest corporate assignees

Capital is funneling into Nanotechnology at Record Rates.

nanotechfunding_image1Nanotech funding is providing millions of dollars in developmental costs to move products and applications from the research labs into the commercial marketplace. The United States spent $1.6 billion in nanotechnology research for fiscal year 2004. This was followed by Japan's $1.0 billion, and respectable, but unavailable amounts by countries such as China, South Korea, and Germany.

Outside of government, the private sector in the United States is also the largest non-governmental source of nanotech funding. Nearly half of the world's 2004 $3.8 billion in private nanotech funding came from U.S. based companies. Also, a large percentage of the nanotechnology patents being issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office are going to U.S. companies, too.

But the report warns that the rest of the world is not that far behind and interest is strong. Nanotech funding is being segmented by country along different areas of development. Taiwan, for instance, is concentrating on MRAM (magnetoresistive random access memory), which is a technology of recording data bits using magnetic charges instead of electrical charges. South Korea, on the otherhand, has filed numerous patents for flat computer displays and flat screen TVs that use carbon nanotubes to light up the screens.

Recently, China has announced large scale nanotech funding and has built large research campuses devoted just to nanotech research and development. China is also becoming the world's largest educator of engineers, people who will take the nanotech funding and turn it into useful products for the world.

Applied science is different from "Tech" in many key areas. One of which, is the lack of the established specialty supplier and consulting base which has allowed Tech companies to flourish.

Companies focussed on emerging markets such as clean energy, water purification and re-use require a strong applied science core to underpin their business. Conventionally, these businesses must invest a large proportion of their funding on building and establishing this capability. However, even then, few have the funding, time or inclination to achieve "critical mass" in this core capability. This lack of critical mass becomes a key limmitation to that companies commercal success.

By focussing on and investing in a complementary set of applied sciences which are broadly applicaple to range of important markets, AIC achieved critical mass in its core capability. In turn this has allowed AIC to achieve and maintain technical leadership in areas which are key to its business streams. Simply put, what it learns in one market aplication can often be applied to another. Areas of concentration would be based on sound, independent economic and scientific reviews. Funding priorities would include areas of concentration recently endorsed by the New Jersey Jobs Growth and Economic Development Commission, New Jersey Commission on Higher Education and the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology.

· Stem cell research – offers direct therapeutic potential for a wide variety of major, intractable diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinsons’s, and neuromuscular disorders and diseases.

· Nanotechnology – great potential exists for solving biomedical problems and applying biological principles to the solution of environmental, industrial, and/or commercial problems, and nanotechnology also has application in the areas of electronic devices and
sensors.

· Renewable energy and clean energy technologies – New Jersey has unique resources and attributes in this area, including existing clean energy program funding.

· Advanced imaging technology – imaging has applications in a broad variety of fields, such as computer science and medicine, and advanced imaging capabilities will make the state’s health care institutions more competitive for grants and contracts in treatment and prevention.

· Genomics – research in this area helps scientists understand the molecular basis of disease, which will lead to breakthroughs in therapeutic treatments and prevention.

· R&D for homeland security and national defense -- among the state’s universities, military labs, federal research facilities, and the private sector, New Jersey is rich in resources in these areas and can take advantage of the fact that, especially in the homeland security area, R&D funding is not already committed to a well-established base of universities.

The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) is an independent corporation created by the Government of Canada to fund research infrastructure. The CFI's mandate is to strengthen the capacity of Canadian universities, colleges, research hospitals, and non-profit research institutions to carry out world-class research and technology development that benefits Canadians.

Since it was created in 1997 the CFI has been entrusted with $3.65 billion by the Government of Canada. The CFI normally funds up to 40 percent of a project’s infrastructure costs which are invested in partnership with eligible institutions and their funding partners from the public, private, and voluntary sectors who provide the remainder. Based on this formula, the total capital investment by the CFI, the research institutions, and their partners, will exceed $11 billion by 2010.
