Our technology will have a profoundly positive impact on chip size; the smaller size of these products will be enabled by Scanimetrics’ chip scale communication, advanced packaging and System-in-Package (SiP) applications.

Scanimetrics, Inc., develops and markets a revolutionary non-contact virtual probe technology that helps enable Moore’s Law for nanoscale devices. Its first products are targeted at testing semiconductor chips and system-in-package (SiP) devices using micro-scale radio frequency techniques. Its WiTAP™ (Wireless Test Access Port) non-contact testing technology enables chip manufacturers to dramatically reduce testing costs, increase testing speed and reliability, and eliminate manufacturing defects caused by standard, physical contact-based testing. By supporting reduced chip sizes, Scanimetrics enables chipmakers and their customers to respond faster to market demands for ever-smaller computing, communications, medical, automotive and other electronic devices.

Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Scanimetrics works with some of the world’s largest chipmakers and equipment suppliers helping them stay on track with Moore’s Law. In October 2006, the company completed a second round of venture funding of CAN $6.5 million, enabling it to expand its market reach and accelerate product development.

Faster X-ray interferometers due to single-photon interference

Short description

X-ray interferometers can measure lengths in the mm range with sub-nm resolution

Article body

X-ray interferometers can measure lengths in the mm range with sub-nm resolution, whereby the almost perfect crystal grid of high-purity silicon is used as a length scale. The dimensions of any sub-µm-structured samples are thereby compared with the lattice parameter of silicon (λ0~0.543... nm) which has been determined very precisely within the scope of the project for the new definition of the Avogadro constant. For metrological applications in connection with scanning probe microscopes, such measurements are of great importance.

Up to now, a further spreading of this method had, however, been impeded by the low translation velocities of only 1 nm/s to 10 nm/s. They are due to the limited intensity of typical laboratory X-ray sources: the necessary filtering of the periodic interference signal leads to a reduction in contrast which, in a classic measurement, requires a slow translation of the interferometer.

In a quantum-mechanical sense, however, interference occurs also in a strongly "diluted" stream of X-ray photons: Regarded as a wave packet, even single photons follow in their temporal impact on the detector the same probability which, in the case of sufficiently intense X-ray light, leads to the continuous signal whose period one wants to determine. This well-known quantum-mechanical fact is now exploited for a specific purpose: if one protocols the times at which the single photons hit the detector, one can, by means of a subsequent Fourier transform of this time series, determine very precisely the frequency at which the lattice periods were passed. At constant velocity, it is then possible to reconstruct the path information, and one obtains the same information as with the classic measurement, but in a much shorter amount of time.

Thus, translation velocities of up to 1000 nm/s could be realised. This method will in future not only be used in further improved measuring arrangements for the determination of the lattice parameter of silicon, but also for other length measurements in nanotechnology.

Applied Plasmonics, a fabless semiconductor company, has invented a practical, mass-market use for devices based on surface plasmons. The new technology employs nano-antennas manufactured in a single layer to generate visible light.

Our mission is to create selected, innovative, products that exploit surface plasmons. We develop intellectual property that enables the design, development, and fabrication of light emission devices on standard CMOS silicon, and other substrates, by exploiting the lithographic capabilities of mainstream semiconductor processing in combination with vacuum microelectronics.

Our devices are the first to permit efficient light generation on a CMOS process without the use of specialty processes. Light is generated without the need for external light sources.

A new solution for miniaturized organic lasers presented by AMO and IBM

AMO GmbH, Aachen and IBM Research GmbH, Rüschlikon were able to realize and characterize optimized photonic feedback structures for miniaturized organic lasers.

Efficient organic lasers with small footprint structures demonstrate the key components of future integrated photonic devices for both, communication and sensing applications. Furthermore, they offer an attractive packaging possibility for light-emitting arrays coupled to high-density optical interconnects.

AMO, IBM and the University of Wuppertal investigated mixed-order two dimensional photonic crystal laser structures in combination with a high-gain organic polymer in terms of lasing threshold and device footprints. Based on a thin film of high-index tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5), mixed-order structures were identified as superior compared to second-order structures. By combining first-order and second-order photonic crystal structures, losses occurring at the edge of the second order structure could be reduced dramatically, leading to a lower laser threshold and to a much smaller footprint of the laser.

Owing to their excellent optical properties and their huge potential for display, sensing, and solar-cell applications, organic semiconductor materials have attracted increasing interest in recent years. These materials exhibit low lasing thresholds and a spectrally broad gain enabling the emission wavelength to be tuned across the entire visible spectrum.

The research activities of the project partners are based on the 6 FP project OLAS (Organic electrically pumped LASer by engineering of heterojunctions in field-effect devices). The project aims at achieving foundational research on Organic Electrically Pumped Laser.

SEOUL, South Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced the launch of its SSD microsite,

SEOUL, South Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the world leader in advanced memory technology, today announced the launch of its SSD microsite, which is designed to help visitors stay up-to-date on SSD technology. (www.samsungssd.com). The site is an educational resource that offers tools for comparing SSD technology against traditional hard drive solutions as well as highlighting the latest SSD news articles, white papers, where to buy, and upcoming events.

“The SSD microsite presents a new and engaging way to help users learn about the benefits and advantages of SSD technology in corporate and high-end consumer notebooks,” said Jim Elliott, director of flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor Inc. “The site features a video that compares many of the key performance metrics between a laptop with SSD versus a laptop with a traditional hard drive.”

Incorporating NAND flash technology, Samsung’s SSDs provide enhanced storage drive performance levels including faster boot and application start-up times, easily surpassing rotating hard disk drives. Free from moving parts, SSDs are noiseless, produce minimum heat and are less susceptible to shock and vibrations that can be challenging to traditional drives. SSDs also improve battery life up to 20 percent in notebook PCs.

The microsite explains the “Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) concept that takes into account the cost of owning a PC over its complete lifecycle. In addition to the purchase of a PC, the cost-based analysis focuses on the direct and indirect costs related to the repairs, support, and performance of a PC. The unique "SSD Savings Calculator" feature provides an interactive calculation table for the visitor to input their PC information to determine their SSD-over-HDD financial savings. (Link: http://www.samsungssd.com/do_the_math/tco.aspx)

An industry leader in solid state technology, Samsung introduced its first 32GB PATA SSD in March 2006, followed by a 64GB version using the SATA I interface in March of this year. In November 2007, Samsung became the first in the industry to sample 1.8-inch and 2.5-inch 64GB SATA II SSDs.

Unidym, Inc., a majority-owned subsidiary of Arrowhead Research Corporation (NASDAQ:ARWR), announced that Unidym’s Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Paul Drzaic, will be presenting an invited lecture today at the Fraunhofer IZM Munich Forum 2007 'be-flexible' Thin Semiconductor Devices on December 05, 2007.

Dr. Drzaic’s presentation, “Is there a Role for Silicon Microelectronics in an Increasingly-flexible World?” will take a broad view of the emergence of flexible electronic devices, and compare the potential of incumbent silicon technologies with emerging microelectronic technologies. He will also describe how novel materials, like Unidym’s carbon nanotube devices, enable a number of new flexible product applications in this increasingly important area of technology. The 'be-flexible' Forum was initiated by Fraunhofer IZM Munich to face present and future challenges concerning research, technology, integration, manufacturing and trends in the fast evolving world of flexible electronics.

“There is more and more interest worldwide in flexible electronics for a variety of applications such as flat panel displays, photovoltaics, wireless devices, and sensors,” said Dr. Drzaic. “Much of the development work in these areas has focused on non-traditional electronic materials (such as organic semiconductors), as most readily compatible with flexible devices. Still, there are massive industries that are well-served by silicon, which will pay more attention to flexible devices as the markets for these products grow. I will examine a number of applications where competitive efforts between traditional silicon and non-traditional materials are underway.”

The goal of Fraunhofer IZM Munich is to bring research results in the areas of polytronic systems, micromechanics, actuators and fluidics, Si technology and vertical system integration, chemical sensors and bioanalytics, and the analysis and testing of integrated systems into usable processes and market-ready products quickly and efficiently, that is, to implement prototype systems and services and make them useful for industry. (http://www.izm-m.fhg.de/en/)

Dr. Paul S. Drzaic, a recognized expert in the field of flexible electronics technology and several areas of materials science, is Chief Technology Officer of Unidym, Inc., working on the commercialization of carbon nanotubes for electronic devices and other applications. Previously, he has held the positions of Vice President for Advanced Development at Alien Technology Corporation, Director of Technology at E Ink Corporation, and Principal Scientist at Raychem Corporation. He holds a PhD in chemistry from Stanford University, and a BS in chemistry from the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Drzaic's professional career has spanned development efforts in novel display technologies, flexible electronics, and RFID technology. He is author of the 1995 book Liquid Crystal Dispersions, a comprehensive review of polymer dispersed liquid crystal technology, as well as 19 journal publications, 51 US patents, and over 20 articles in conference and popular publications. He is a winner of the 2002 National Team Innovation Award from the American Chemical Society, as well as an Editor's Choice award for the R&D 100 awards for 2001. Drzaic is currently President-Elect of the Society for Information Display, has been on the SID Board of Directors for five years, and has served as General or Program Chair for four major SID conferences. Drzaic also has held several leadership positions within the Materials Research Society, including his current position as Chair of the Editorial Board of the MRS Bulletin, and serving as a Meeting Chair for the Spring 2006 MRS meeting. He has also sat on technical advisory boards for four different university-based US Nationals Science Foundation Materials Research Centers.

About Unidym, Inc.
