When thin films of silicon nanoparticles are deposited onto silicon substrates, ultraviolet light is absorbed and converted into electrical current. With appropriate connections, the film acts as nanosilicon photovoltaic solar cells that convert solar radiation to electrical energy.

The process of producing silicon nanoparticles is supported by 10 issued US patents, 7 pending US patents, 2 issued foreign counterpart patents and 19 pending foreign counterpart patents.

Our research and development work involves integrating films of silicon nanoparticles on glass surfaces in order to convert solar energy coming through home and office windows into electricity, without losing significant transparency or requiring major changes in manufacturing infrastructure.

Once a technology has been identified, we fund the research and development activities relating to the technology with the intention of ultimately, if warranted, licensing, commercializing and marketing the subject technology, either through internal resources, collaborative agreements or otherwise.

Applied science is different from "Tech" in many key areas. One of which, is the lack of the established specialty supplier and consulting base which has allowed Tech companies to flourish.

Companies focussed on emerging markets such as clean energy, water purification and re-use require a strong applied science core to underpin their business. Conventionally, these businesses must invest a large proportion of their funding on building and establishing this capability. In turn this has allowed AIC to achieve and maintain technical leadership in areas which are key to its business streams. Simply put, what it learns in one market aplication can often be applied to another. Additionally, with established laboratories, enginering facilities and staff, AIC avoids the need to build new facilities for each new business stream.

In Summary, AIC:
