New research shows that a film of carbon nanotubes may be able to replace two of the layers normally used in a solar cell, with improved performance at a lower cost. Researchers have found a surprising way to give the nanotubes the properties they need: add defects.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Currently, these solar cells, called dye-sensitized solar cells, have a transparent film made of an oxide that is applied to glass and conducts electricity. In addition, a separate film made of platinum acts as a catalyst to speed the chemical reactions involved.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Both of these materials have disadvantages, though. The oxide films can&#039;t easily be applied to flexible materials: they perform much better on a rigid and heat resistant substrate like glass. This increases costs and limits the kinds of products that can be made. And expensive equipment is necessary to create the platinum films.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Jessika Trancik of the Santa Fe Institute, Scott Calabrese Barton of Michigan State University and James Hone of Columbia University decided to use carbon nanotubes to create a single layer that could perform the functions of both the oxide and platinum layers. They needed it to have three properties: transparency, conductivity, and catalytic activity.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Ordinary carbon nanotubes films are so-so in each of these properties. The obvious ways of improving one, though, sacrifice one of the others. For example, making the film thicker makes it a better catalyst, but then it&#039;s less transparent.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Previous theory had suggested that materials may function better as catalysts when they have tiny defects, providing sites for chemicals to attach. So the researchers tried exposing the carbon nanotubes to ozone, which roughs them up a bit. Very thin films, they found, became dramatically better catalysts, with more than ten-fold improvement.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In fact, the performance gets close to that of platinum. &quot;That&#039;s remarkable,&quot; Trancik says, &quot;because platinum is considered pretty much the best catalyst there is.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In order to address the trade-off between transparency and conductivity, the researchers tried another trick on a bottom layer of tubes: they created carbon nanotubes that were longer. This improved both conductivity and transparency.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The carbon nanotube films might be used in fuel cells and batteries as well.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&quot;This study is an example of using nanostructuring of materials – changing things like defect density and tube length at very small scales – to shift trade-offs between materials properties and get more performance out of a given material,&quot; Trancik says. &quot;Making inexpensive materials behave in advanced ways is critical for achieving low-carbon emissions and low cost energy technologies.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The researchers published their results recently in Nano Letters. They are currently in the process of filing a patent application for their techniques.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Edmond, OK (April 23, 2008): A two-year $344,800 grant has been awarded to XetaComp Nanotechnology LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NanoBioMagnetics, Inc., (NBMI) through the Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Program (ONAP).  The program is administered by the Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology (OCAST).&lt;br /&gt;
The grant was one of the two largest among $1.25 million in state funds awarded to eight Oklahoma companies active in nanotechnology.  XetaComp also had been awarded a $250,000 grant in the first Oklahoma Nanotechnology Applications Project awards last year.&lt;br /&gt;
XetaComp, with offices and manufacturing facilities in Lawton, Oklahoma, was established by NBMI in 2006 to develop and market a range of functionalized nanomaterials.  The company’s initial commercial target is a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB physical sunscreen on which a line of dermal care products are based and are now being introduced under the sunVex® trademark as cancer prevention tools.  The technology for sunVex® is based on a proprietary nanofabrication process that yields a surface-treated titanium dioxide nanomaterial.  The company’s technology offers the marketplace high-performance UVA/UVB attenuation together with cost-effective economics.&lt;br /&gt;
Charles Seeney, CEO and Founder of NBMI, said the infusion of working capital is important to XetaComp’s product development and commercialization efforts.  “There has been tremendous interest in sunVex and related dermal care products, and the timing of this grant is highly meaningful to our success in bringing these products onto the market,” he said.&lt;br /&gt;
“The efforts of ONAP and OCAST’s executive director Michael Carolina are achieving significant results in positioning Oklahoma as an emerging leader in nanotechnology,” Seeney said.&lt;br /&gt;
NanoBioMagnetics, Inc., with offices and research facilities in Edmond, Oklahoma, is a nanobiomaterials development company pioneering an emerging area of nanomedicine referred to as Organ-Assisting-Device (OAD) technologies.  As these healthcare technologies are developed and validated, NBMI’s business model calls for them to be spun off as separate business units for manufacture and commercialization, and XetaComp was organized as the first of these spinoffs.&lt;br /&gt;

Detailed in Science, the finding is a breakthrough in developing nanotechnology that provides a new strategy for designing electronic materials, including inexpensive and multifunctional organic conductors that have long been considered the key to smaller, cheaper, and faster technologies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Pitt team found that fullerenes can old and transfer an electrical charge much like the most highly conductive atoms, explained project head Hrvoje Petek, a professor of physics and chemistry in Pitt&#039;s School of Arts and Sciences and codirector of Pitt&#039;s Petersen Institute for NanoScience and Engineering. The research was performed by Pitt post-doctoral associates Min Feng and Jin Zhao.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;When an electron was introduced into a fullerene molecule, the shape of the electron distribution mimicked that of a hydrogen atom or an atom from the alkali metal group, which includes lithium, sodium, and potassium. Moreover, when two fullerenes were placed next to each other on a copper surface, they showed the electron distribution of their chemical bond and appeared as H2, a hydrogen molecule. The assembly exhibited metal-like conductivity when the team extended it to a wire 1-molecule-wide.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&quot;Our work provides a new perspective on what determines the electronic properties of materials,&quot; Petek said. &quot;The realization that hollow molecules can have metal-like conductivity opens the way to develop novel materials with electronic and chemical properties that can be tailored by shape and size.&quot;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Although the team worked with fullerenes, the team&#039;s results apply to all hollow molecules, Petek added, including carbon nanotubes - rolled, 1-atom-thick sheets of graphite 100,000 times smaller than a human hair.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The team&#039;s research shows promise for the future of electronics based on molecular conductors. These molecule-based devices surpass the semiconductor and metal conductors of today in terms of lower cost, flexibility, and the ability to meld the speed and power of optics and electronics. Plus, unlike such inorganic conductors as silicon, molecule-based electronics can be miniaturized to a 1-dimensional scale (1-molecule-wide), which may enable them to conduct electricity with minimal loss and thus improve the performance of an electronic device.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Traditionally, the problem has been that organic conductors have not conducted electrical current very well, Petek said. The Pitt team&#039;s discovery could enable scientists to finally overcome that problem, he added.&lt;/p&gt;

Seraphima is a play on the word &quot;seraphim&quot;, an angel, for the investment approach of this fund. This does not mean we are limited to funding with angel money.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Why Nanotechnology?&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Nanotechnologies have potential to add significant value in performance and eventually lower cost to many products across all sectors. These commercial benefits are happening much sooner than most people think.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;President Bush in his January 2006 State of the Union address says he wishes to double funding in R&amp;amp;D including nanotechnology.  By the end of 2005, governments spent US$18 Billion of taxpayer money into nanotech R&amp;amp;D.  US$6 Billion are forecast for 2006.  President Bush signed the Nanotech bill on Wednesday, December 3, 2003 for US$3.7 Billion over the next 4 years starting 2005 for nanotech research. This does not even include the nanotechnology funding set aside for military and defense related applications.  The signing of the bill by President Bush makes nanotechnology the highest federally funded basic science and technology effort since the space race. The US only makes up about 25% of the global government spending on nanotech research with Japan just slightly ahead of the US. An NSF report states that Nanotech has the potential to grow to a US$1 Trillion per year industry.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Venture capital investment for nanotechnology rose strongly in 2005, with institutional venture capitalists devoting $480 million into nanotechnology startups up from $410 million in 2004.  Venture capital spending in nanotech from 1999-2002 was close to US$900 Million with US$386 Million in 2002 and dipped to about $325 million in 2003.  Immunicon went public in April 2004 with a market cap of $182 million after raising $86 million in venture capital. On the other hand, life sciences company Invitrogen of Carlsbad, Calif., bought Quantum Dot Corporation for $26 million in 2005 after the startup burned through $40 million in venture funding. Nanosys announced an IPO in April 2004 but withdrew shortly thereafter in August 2004.  A US$38 Million second round went to Nanosys and US$22 Million went to Nanostream Spring 2003. $17.5 Million Series B round went to Zettacore lead by Kleiner Perkins Caulfield &amp;amp; Byer and US$30 Million Series B round went to Molecular Imprints just before the end of 2003. These are just a sampling of some of the bigger venture funding deals done.  Only 9% of nanotechnology venture capital deals have exited.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;However, venture capital funding of nanotech remains &quot;outstripped by corporate R&amp;amp;D spending and government funding by a factor of 19 times&quot; (Nordan, Lux Research).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Our research in 2003 showed over 20,000 patents issued in nanotech explicitly which means there are many more because much of nanotech isn&#039;t called nanotech. Highest corporate assignees&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Genentech, IBM, Hitachi, NEC, Motorola&lt;/p&gt;

The United States spent $1.6 billion in nanotechnology research for fiscal year 2004.  This was followed by Japan&#039;s $1.0 billion, and respectable, but unavailable amounts by countries such as China, South Korea, and Germany. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Outside of government, the private sector in the United States is also the largest non-governmental source of nanotech funding.  Nearly half of the world&#039;s 2004 $3.8 billion in private nanotech funding came from U.S. based companies.  Also, a large percentage of the nanotechnology patents being issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office are going to U.S. companies, too.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;But the report warns that the rest of the world is not that far behind and interest is strong.  Nanotech funding is being segmented by country along different areas of development.  Taiwan, for instance, is concentrating on MRAM (magnetoresistive random access memory), which is a technology of recording data bits using magnetic charges instead of electrical charges. South Korea, on the otherhand, has filed numerous patents for flat computer displays and flat screen TVs that use carbon nanotubes to light up the screens.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;• Expand temporary visa programs and improve the immigration system so anyone with technological prowess--and certainly anyone who earns an advanced degree at a U.S. institution--can stay, work and become a citizen. But charge the Labor Department to create a watchdog unit that ensures employers are not underpaying foreign workers hired on temporary or transitional visas.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;• Create a metric for defining broadband service in a flexible, evolving manner. Make that baseline part of the universal-service right of every citizen. Charter the National Institutes of Health to define a road map for a baseline of digital, networked medical-service delivery, and make it part of any universal-healthcare program. Make sure the appropriate tax and grant incentives are in place to encourage the healthcare industry to transition at a brisk, innovative pace to electronic systems.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;• Recognize that the patent office and the courts are overburdened because the U.S. patent system is being pulled too hard in too many directions. Create a Cabinet-level position of national chief technology officer.
