NZ: Scientist – Mathematical Modelling (Permanent)

Ruakura Campus
Ref: AGR1093

Many of the world’s most amazing scientific discoveries are the result of someone ‘taking a closer look’. It’s this inquisitive nature and relentless search for answers that fuels scientific advancement. And it’s also what we’d like you to apply to us, right now. Mind you, you won’t need to look too hard to discover AgResearch is the best place to showcase the skills you have developed in applied mathematics.

At first glance you’ll see we are New Zealand’s largest research institute –world leaders in pastoral research working at the leading-edge of innovation. Scratch the surface a little more and you’ll find all the diversity and intellectual challenge an experienced Scientist could ask for. This is a highly collaborative role where you’ll be involved in everything from understanding biological concepts, mechanisms, and processes, identifying relationships between the components involved, quantifying these using mathematics and logic, and modelling and simulating processes to arrive at specific predictions about the outcome of future experiments and observations. Knowledge sharing is a pivotal component of our success, so you can also look forward to contributing to scientific publications.

Our people are at the pinnacle of their professions, so with your PhD in Applied Mathematics or a related discipline, with solid analytical skills and your knowledge of mathematical software (e.g. MATLAB) you will fit right in. Good communication skills, a proven ability to build relationships with other scientists and to work across disciplines, as well as excellent time management and ability to work to deadlines are also required. Some experience in modelling biological processes will be an advantage.
