RC was a pioneering research center in the field of ultrasonic motors with invention of the bimodal ultrasonic motor in 1973 (SU patent ), ultrasonic levitation devices ( SU patent) and during two decades was granted for more than 1500 SU patents.
RC world class research has been largely unavailable to the rest of the world. Our innovations were mostly applied to Soviet military and Space applications and were not available for the wide public. Since 1992 a group of experienced consultants from Wharton school and business executives retained by the United Nations has worked with RC "Vibrotechnika" to: (a) preserve its intellectual property, (b) expose its scientists to international business philosophy and, (c) prepare the institute to market its technology. This has been a gradual, step-by-step process. As a result our researches have continued to play their craft, so the science and technology continues to be cutting edge.
Microsystems Technology started in Vibrotechnika in 1981 and the silicon wet and dry micromachining technologies were developed for the pressure sensors, adaptive optics mirrors and optical scanners. The nanoresolution displacement sensors, CVD diamond polishing technologies were developed and international patents applications filed. The latest research direction includes Scanning Probe Microscopy for surface properties imaging, metrology, surface nanomanipulation, biomedical applications.

RC "Vibrotechnika" was reorganized into the Research Center for Microsystems&Nanotechnology in 1999 to act as a focus for interdisciplinary research into microsystems and nanoinstrumentation through which new ideas for improved performance, new materials and miniatiurization may be brought into industrial practice. The Center aims to stimulate nanoscience and MST activity in Lithuania by participating in European and global networks, research projects and by the information dissemination.

The Center is a coordinator of Lithuanian Nanoscience and Nanotechnology network.
