U.S. company NanoBio Corporation has developed a topical lotion to treat cold sores, also known as herpes labialis, and reports findings from its second phase study indicating the efficiency and safety of the product in 482 patients. The new lotion is an emulsion of nanoscale droplets that accumulate in the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin and disrupt the outer lipid membrane of the herpes virus. The article says that NanoBio’s lotion was shown to heal cold sores significantly faster than the leading oral anti-herpetic treatments available on the market. NanoBio chairman James R. Baker, Jr. said, "Through this trial, we have confirmed that NB-001 achieves the efficacy of leading systemic treatments without presenting safety, drug interaction or toxicity risks.” Baker further said: “The product's novel mechanism leaves little risk of drug resistance, which is a concern with the systemic antiviral therapies used to treat herpes labialis.
