In 2004, QuantTera was founded by Dr. Matt Kim in the Phoenix metropolitan area of Arizona. In 2005 and 2006, QuantTera was awarded several small business innovative research (SBIR) Phase I and Phase II contracts to develop LASERs for aerospace communications.

Dr. Matt Kim is the Founder and President of QuantTera. Dr. Kim with his background in microelectronic industry has developed innovative nano-structured LASERs, detectors and amplifiers, which form the enabling components for fiber-optic technologies. Dr. Kim received a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and B.S. in Engineering Physics from Cornell University. In 2000, Dr. Kim co-founded MicroLink Devices, Inc., a leading manufacturer of transistors for cellular communications in Niles, IL. At MicroLink he was Vice President of Operations and supervised the transistor manufacturing program. At MicroLink, he was awarded a National Science Foundation SBIR Phase I and Phase II for quantum dot LASERs. From 1994 to 2000, Dr. Kim served as a Principal Staff Scientist at Motorola's Corporate Research Laboratory. From 1989 to 1994, Dr. Kim was a Senior Scientist at Bandgap Technology Corporation where he was in charge of the characterization of transistors and LASERs for telecommunication applications. Dr. Kim is Chair of the Arizona Nanotechnology Cluster, a state wide non-profit organization for the promotion and business development of nanotechnology for the benefit of Arizona. Dr. Kim is a member of the IEEE and the American Physical Society.
