The North East of England has notable academic and commercial strengths in Nanotechnology, Microsystems and Photonics. The region is home to a large number of established and growing advanced manufacturing companies in chemicals, semiconductors, photonics and materials. The region also hosts the UKs Department of Trade and Industry University Innovation Centre (UIC) for nanotechnology, which builds on the nanotechnology research strengths of Durham, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland and Teesside Universities.

The Science and Industry Council for the North East of England and the Regional Development Agency, One NorthEast, established CENAMPS as part of the Region's Strategy for Success.
