Nanotechnology has emerged as the single largest revolutionary science topic of the 21st century. The ability to manipulate materials on a very small scale will lead to extraordinary advances in areas such as material science, medicine and energy. The possibilities have captured both attention and resources globally. The U.S. federal government alone will spend $1.5 billion on nanotechnology in FY2007.

While the primary focus is still on fundamental research, it is vital that the infrastructure needed to realize a return on this substantial investment also begin to emerge. Use of nanotechnology in myriad applications will require new manufacturing methods and facilities. An industry goal of seeking the highest returns on investment through manufacturing partnerships will influence the speed at which the industry grows and prospers.
