Nanotechnology – Sci-Fi in the Packaging Industry

Nanotechnology is the different craze among media, academia, investors (just think of the ROI if you hit a company that comes up wit the best “micromachine” for God knows what) added to kinds of industry. How will it affect the packaging industry?

Just a inappreciable background on Nanotechnology for these of you who are not in the know it, do not read comic books or watch the Sci-Fi channel oftentimes. Nanoscience and Nanotechnology’s top-of-the-line push, excitement or “umph”, if you will, is in the arenas of materials science, electronics, breitling optoelectronics and biomedical. Biomedical is extremely exciting as it can be used hopefully for repairing organs, removing disease, or undeviating making organs operate manifold efficiently. Then that will move into the noncivil arena. How? A soldier can be repaired dashing if injured. Or perchance the soldier can run dashing if Nanotechnology or Micromachines are being at home with enhance reflexes. The list goes on and on; you can use your imagination.

So Nanotechnology is the ability to manipulate molecules and atoms to create structures, which may be used in the physical world. So whence does that apply to packaging? Well the science will help deliver materials with colossal functionality or durability for the increase in shelf life. Examples, that popcorn bag that lower tries to uncluttered will not spill over your different carpet; the coke can that can stand up to punctures a inappreciable greater. How about that box in your garage that had the cement mix in it, which is instanter soaked with water? Having to deal with a mess like that would make anyone aberrant.

Nanotechnology will provide greater fracture hardness for aluminum. Note the above example. Nanoscience will provide greater plastic strength for items that use carbon fiber and improve flame resistance for plastics with “nanoclay” composites.

Gas-barrier characteristics of Nanoclay in food packaging have sparked colossal interest. Using Nanoclay in packaging films, i.e. shrink-wrap helps to create a greater oxygen barrier. Nanoclay will likewise be used for the tracking of products through the supply chain.

In the alongside 5 years 5 million pounds of nanocomposite earthly will go into undeviating and plastic packaging. This will affect the packaging of cozy drinks, beer, meats and a colossal array of packaged foods and condiments. These will be the first valid items almost on one packaged in Nanotechnology Packaging. One can certainly hope it will allow one to get that conclusive bit of ketchup expired of that inappreciable pack whilst one is sitting at the ballpark!!!

One of the problems with Nanotechnology as with any different technology is the cost. This is something different and manifold companies in the papery, packaging and printing industries cannot really see what Nanotechnology hanging loose for them. Will the cost be outweighed a shot benefit, hopefully?

If the affects of Nanotechnology and its challenges are not addressed suddenly the inevitable of compositeness amongst companies and organizations will be threatened.

The application of Nanotechnology shows very many promise in the world of packaging. It will vastly improve the packaging materials properties. The only problem is these improvements are years forth. Will companies see the benefit of continued investment? Or will they decide not equal to reinvent the wheel. Who knows? Time will tell.
