Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have received much attention as potential low cost alternatives to conventional silicon-based pn junction devices. Usually the working electrode in these systems is a 10 μm thick TiO2 nanocrystalline film. This experiment evaluated the performance of highly ordered arrays of TiO2 nanorods, highly ordered arrays of TiO2 nanotubules of different wall thicknesses, and sintered TiO2 nanoparticles as the working electrode in DSCs. It was determined that DSCs based on ordered arrays of TiO2 nanostructures have higher charge collection efficiencies and thus higher short-circuit current densities than those based on sintered TiO2 nanoparticles, with the most efficient cells were those on ordered arrays of TiO2 nanorods.
