Footprints of Nanotechnology Found in 25 Academic Majors in Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- The Iranian researchers at Azzahra University presented a more vivid picture of the importance of various academic majors in the advancement of nano science and technology in Iran through investigating the technology status and development trend.

Identifying scientific majors that constitute and are interconnected with a brand new field of science like nanotechnology, makes educational needs assessment more effective. About the future of nano science and technology in Iran, it is anticipated that majors like Chemistry and Physics set the foundations while the engineering majors, particularly Materials Engineering, make practical use.

“Citation analysis approach is used for various cases, one of which is to investigate about the progression trend and development pattern of a science,” Hoda Abedi, a member of the research group, told INIC, adding, “We have applied the method to study the formation and growth of nano sciences in Iran.”

“The research was intended to introduce and clarify different branches of nano science and technology in order to help the country’s future plans for education and research. The results of the research have provided a more clarified picture of the rank of nano science and technology among the other majors,” she added.

The research has evaluated every field related to nanotechnology through a priority hierarchy. According to the research, about 86% citations to non-nanotech majors have been made.

It was found that the highest citation number was for Materials Engineering (metals formation specialization). After that, Physics (accounting all of its fields) was placed in the second rank with 856 citations. And finally the other field of Materials Engineering (814 citations) was known to have the highest portion in interdisciplinary relations of nano science and technology.
