Encapsulation and barrier technologies patent filings see explosive growth since 2000

Growth coincides with OLED lighting patent filings explosive growth since 2000

Cambridge, United Kingdom, 25 August 2010 – “The commercialisation of OLED technology is driving the growth of sealing, barrier and encapsulation technologies, and more than 90% of the patents since according to the latest Encapsulation and barriers: A review of the patent landscape from cintelliq Limited, a leading provider of information services and technology consulting to the organic semiconductor and organic electronics industries.

“This report is the first of its kind to clearly identify in detail the filing strategies of the leading encapsulation and barrier technology developers. Encapsulation and barriers: A review of the patent landscape is an essential resource for developing a company’s technology development and roadmap”, said Craig Cruickshank, lead analyst cintelliq Limited. Craig added, “The increasing market acceptance of OLED based displays has been a major driver in the development of encapsulation systems, as OLED lighting begins to gain market adoption this too will also be a primary driver for further development. In fact the growth in encapsulation and barrier technologies has shown the same explosive growth OLED lighting has shown since 2000.”

Readers of the report will be able to determine the encapsulation and barrier technology space, identify the number of patents being filed, by who, and when, which has been cited the most, which assignees are active, and their breadth of portfolios.

The research for this report is based on more than 5,700 patents – 800 granted patents (EP and US) and 4,927 published (EP, JP, US and WO), that have been made public up to December 2009.
