Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute : Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations ( CCNI )
The CCNI will cultivate a broad partnership of university, industry, and government organizations focused on the development and application of new generations of simulation technologies on world-class super computers. The founding partners of CCNI are: Renssleaer Polytechnic Institute, a leading research and educational institution, IBM, a leading super computer and nanoelectronics technology company, and New York state with a history of strategic, long-term investments in nanotechnology research, development, and manufacturing.
Network for Computational Nanotechnology ( NCN )
Address: West Lafayette
While addressing challenges in nanotechnology NCN researchers produce new algorithms, approaches, and software tools with capabilities not yet available commercially. As part of the NSF’s infrastructure for the National Nanotechnology Initiative, the NCN engages the community through workshops and seminars and novel educational resources.
MagiQ Technologies, Inc.
Address: Somerville
MagiQ Technologies is a pioneer in converting quantum information processing opportunities into real-world implementations. MagiQ has assembled a group of scientific collaborators to provide the company with early insight into the latest developments in QIP research. MagiQ has also assembled an advisory board of leaders from academia, business and government to provide ongoing outside counsel throughout the product identification and development process.
General Nanotechnology
Address: Berkeley
General Nanotechnology (GN) has created and is developing hardware and software that provides advanced capabilities in imaging, nano-manipulation, nano-fabrication, nano-spectro-photometry, near field optical probes below the aperture (50nm) limit, and diamond and other nanotools tips and parts.
ZettaCore, Inc.
Address: Englewood
ZettaCore was founded in 1999 by scientists from the University of California Riverside and North Carolina State University, along with business executives with experience in computer, IT and biotechnology firms. Subsequently, the company attracted considerable attention in the venture capital community, closing its first round of funding late in 2001. ZettaCores venture backers include Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Oxford Biosciences, Radius Venture Partners, Access Venture Partners, Garrett Capital/BancOne and Stanford University.
Nantero, Inc.
Address: Woburn
Nantero, Inc. is building a high density nonvolatile random access memory chip, which can replace DRAM (dynamic RAM), SRAM (static RAM), flash memory, and ultimately hard disk storage–in other words a universal memory chip suitable for countless existing and new applications in the field of electronics. The target markets in aggregate exceed $100B in revenue per year. Nantero’s product is called NRAM (Nanotube-based/ Nonvolatile RAM), developed using proprietary concepts and methods derived from leading-edge research in nanotechnology.
KnowmTech LLC.
NanoLogic, Inc.
Address: Richmond
We are defining the next generation of computers and computing: hybrid logic systems based on nanoscale devices in application-specific computing architectures. We envision incorporating nanologic in useful products, and providing the vision and leadership to dominate an industry based on it.
Nanolytics Inc. (2007 : Acquired by Advanced Liquid Logic, Inc. )
There were over three billion biochemical assays performed in the United States, European Union and Japan in 2000 that cost over $24 billion(B) to perform. Most were done in 96 or 384 well plates in 50-299 microliter(uL) volumes. These relatively large volumes necessitate the creation of extensive infrastructures for generating, storing and disposing of the required reagents and labware. Attendant problems include evaporation, air bubbles, long incubation times and reagent stability all of which limit boththroughput and quality of data.
D-Wave Systems Inc.
Address: Columbia
D-Wave Systems Inc. (D-Wave) is building a new type of ultra-fast computational machine-a superconducting quantum computer-whose speed will be far in excess of any current or future silicon-based processors.
Ramtron Intl. Corp.
When an electric field is applied to a ferroelectric crystal, the central atom moves in the direction of the field. As the atom moves within the crystal, it passes through an energy barrier, causing a charge spike. Internal circuits sense the charge spike and set the memory. If the electric field is removed from the crystal, the central atom stays in position, preserving the state of the memory. Therefore, the FRAM memory needs no periodic refresh and when power fails FRAM memory retains its data. It’s fast, and doesn’t wear out.
Komag, Inc.
Address: Lake Forest
Komag is the world’s largest independent supplier of thin-film disks, the primary high-capacity storage medium for digital data in computers and consumer appliances. Since being founded in 1983, Komag has led the industry in production volume and technology for thin-film disks. We have capitalized on our technological strength in thin-film processes and our manufacturing capabilities to achieve and maintain our position as a leading independent supplier to the thin-film media market.
QCADesigner
QCA is an emerging nanotechnology concept for the realization of a computer built with arrays of nano-scale QCA cells. These QCA cells are capable of performing all complex computational functions required for general-purpose computation. QCA has been listed as one of the six emerging nanotechnologies with applications in future computers by the International Technology Roadmap For Semiconductors (ITRS). QCADesigner facilitates rapid design, layout and simulation of QCA circuits by providing a powerful CAD features available in more complex circuit design tools.
