College of Engineering Mathematics and Physical Sciences

This new full-time post is available from 1 October 2011 on a fixed term basis until 30 September 2013.

Phase change materials are considered the next candidate for non-volatile memories and are already being commercialized because of their remarkable properties. However, the interplay between their electrical, optical and mechanical properties has not been thoroughly explored, nor has it been exploited for novel applications. In this project we seek to explore the use of Phase Change Memories in Nanoelectromechanical Systems (NEMS). This project will be done in collaboration with an industrial partner, Plarion Ltd., Cambridge, UK, and may require occasional travel to their site.

To spearhead the scientific effort in this direction, the Advanced Nanoscale Engineering Laboratory seeks an energetic, highly motivated and independent scientist to join this exciting and potentially high-impact endeavor. Candidates with experience and qualifications in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and other related subjects (such as Applied Physics, Nanotechnology etc.), and expertise in at least three of the following are encouraged to apply: -

-           Hands-on micro and nanofabrication techniques (cleanroom experience)

-           Expertise with performing multi-physics simulations using numerical modeling such as Finite Element Modeling

-           Hands-on experimental skills in electronics and deep familiarity with performing and understanding electrical measurements. RF experience would be desired but not required.

-           Ability to build low-vacuum electrical and/or optical experiments

-           Evidence of ability to conduct independent research of high quality such as first author peer reviewed publication/s and/or conference presentations

Applicants will preferably possess a PhD with emphasis in RF-MEMS, NEMS, Phase Change Materials and/or Device Physics and will be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes.
