CHARLESTON — A seminar on nanotechnology and its practical applications for economic development and business opportunities is planned for 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, at the Holiday Inn Express Civic Center in downtown Charleston.

Hosted by the Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advanced Flexible Manufacturing and the Marshall University Center for Diagnostic Nanosystems, the NASA-sponsored seminar will feature nanotechnology experts such as Craig Friedrich of Michigan Technological University.

Nanotechnology is the study, manipulation and manufacture of ultra-small structures and machines made up of as few as one molecule. Experts say these activities will open unprecedented commercial opportunities. The National Science Foundation predicts that Nanotechnology will blossom into a $1 trillion industry within the next nine years, according to the press release.

“The potential economic impact that West Virginia stands to realize from the use of Nanotechnology is little short of enormous,” Charlotte Weber, director and CEO of RCBI, said in a press release. “Nanotechnology’s job creation in manufacturing, healthcare research and other fields promises to be truly significant.”

Nanochallenge & Polymerchallenge 2011 is an international business plan competition organized by Veneto Nanotech, aiming at attracting the best nanotechnology innovations and business ideas. It offers financial and strategic support to scientists, researchers and entrepreneurs ready to start a real company in the north east of Italy (Venetian area – nanotechnology category) or in the Campania Region (Polymer based materials category).
The new entrepreneurs have access to facilities, labs, instruments and financial network to develop their technologies and products. This helps them speed the development phase and enter the market.
The competition offers a total amount of 600.000 euro: 300.000 euro for startups participating in the nanotechnology category and 300.000 euro for the polymer-based materials category.
Anybody anywhere with an innovative and high-growth nanotechnology or polymer-based materials business idea can participate and try to win one of the Prizes.
The money must be used to start a company in the territory where the two clusters are located.

Prizes of the two categories are not cumulative: teams must compete either for the nanotechnology or the polymer-based materials category.

Deadline: September 2nd 2011

The International Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology (International ASET) and the University of Ottawa are pleased to organize the 2nd International Conference on Nanotechnology: Fundamentals and Applications. As globalization leads to increasing interaction among regions and peoples of the world, it is important to encourage multi-disciplinarity in emerging scientific topics such as nanotechnology. Nanotechnology, even though rapidly growing, is still in its infancy and has given rise to numerous novel applications for the solution of many current problems.

The aim of the 2nd International Conference on Nanotechnolgy: Fundamentals and Applications is to gather scholars from all over the world to present advances in the field of nanotechnology and to foster an environment conducive to exchanging ideas and information. This conference will also provide a golden opportunity to develop new collaborations and meet world nanotechnology experts on the fundamentals, applications and products. Through the 2nd conference a great opportunity to share knowledge and expertise will be created taking advantage from the synergy of the 1st conference.
