The Micro and Nano-scale Transport Laboratory (MNT Lab) seeks an experienced Research Associate for its microfluidic and nanomaterial based biosensor research program. The successful candidate will be expected to increase the scale and focus of research in microfluidic device fabrication, fluid flow characterization, and sensing application. The researcher will actively engage with the internal (National Institute for Nanotechnology (NINT)) and external organizations to enhance the research portfolio of the MNT Lab. The successful candidate may also have a role supervising Masters/PhD students in the MNT Lab.

The successful candidate will engage in research in the microfluidic device fabrication, fluid flow characterization, and sensor and fuel cell electrode. He or she will also contribute significantly to publishing papers in international journals; support and, if necessary, supervise the work of research students; submit research proposals to funding bodies jointly with the director of the MNT Lab and according to the research strategy of the unit; collaborate with colleagues in nano-material research activities, where appropriate; play a part in developing national and international research links and joint grant applications in the field nonomaterials and point of care devices; prepare and present papers in seminars, conferences, workshops, etc.; and actively engage in writing research reports.

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in mechanical engineering or physics or a related discipline
  • Demonstrable experience in research with an appropriate publication record on designing and testing of microfluidic devices
  • Experience with fluid flow characterization in microchannel
  • Experience in using surface characterization techniques for producing nano-engineered surfaces
  • Experience in designing and publishing microparticle filtration techniques in microchannel
  • Experience with nanoparticle based fuel cell electrode characterization
  • A record of presenting research finding in national and international conferences

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff agreement, this position has an appointment of two years, with the possibility of extension, and offers a comprehensive benefits package and annual salary range of $52,167 – $65,215, which is commensurate with experience and subject to the University Furlough Levy.
