Basic Gene Mapping Course October 25-29, 2010
Max Delbr=FCck Center (MDC) for Molecular Medicine
Berlin, Germany
The seventh annual basic gene mapping course will be held at the MDC <http://www.mdc-berlin.de/> in Berlin from October 25-29, 2010. Emphasis of this course is on strategies for genetic mapping of human Mendelian and complex traits. The goal of the course is to teach the course participants both theory and application of methods for linkage analysis (parametric and nonparametric) and association studies.
This course will include theory as well as practical exercises. The exercises will be carried out using a variety of computer programs (LINKAGE, GENEHUNTER, MERLIN, ALLEGRO, SIMWALK2, SLINK, PLINK, TAGGER, etc.) and with pencil and paper. TOPICS include: parametric methods (two-point and multipoint analysis); allele sharing (nonparametric) methods for sib-pairs and extended families (two-point and multipoint analysis); linkage admixture (heterogeneity); tagSNP selection, haplotype reconstruction, association studies (trios and case-control); data quality control; controlling for population admixture/substructure; sample size estimation and power estimation (extended families [simulation studies], sib-pairs and case-control data), controlling the family wise error rate (FWER) and estimating empirical p-values. The organizers and instructors for the course are Suzanne Leal (Baylor College of Medicine) and Michael Nothnagel (Kiel University & Max Delbr=FCck Center). The maximum number of participants is 30.
